[Editorial Tuesday] Should Anime Adaptations Follow Their Source Material?

If there’s one thing otaku are known for, it’s their unending enthusiasm towards the medium that best captures their respective interests. Whether it’s idol groups, game developers, a certain genre of anime, or serialized manga, once a true fan gets ahold of something, they almost never let go. While this sort of “brand loyalty” is usually a great thing for anime studios and manga publishers alike, the lines start to blur a little when it comes to adaptation from one medium to another. Which is exactly when we see the fans bare their fangs in defense of their preferred medium, in what I will politely call a “less than civil manner.” So the big question today is this: should anime adaptations follow their source material? In order to better understand the question, we’ll explore several examples of adaptations and fans’ reactions, whether good or bad, and why that’s the case. As always, this is just my opinion on the subject, and I’ll try to be as thoughtful as possible while considering both sides of the issue. I’ll be discussing different shows and manga, but will try to avoid spoilers as much as possible. Let’s get into it!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

A Fork in the Road

ET captcha A Fork in th Road

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles comparing both mediums, it’s usually (though not always) the case that manga comes before an anime, for a wide variety of reasons. The development cycle is a bit slower and the production costs for manga are much cheaper (despite the insane hours worked by industry professionals), and because it’s such an inundated part of Japanese culture, which has a tendency to always be on the move, it’s consumed by a much wider audience on a much more regular basis. So in a way, manga tests the waters. If a particular series is well received, it makes sense to adapt it into an anime. The reasons are twofold: an anime adaptation is likely to attract pre-established fans of the manga, while hopefully drawing in new fans who are more inclined to spend their time and money on shows instead of books, since fans are drawn to each medium for different reasons. Those responsible for adaptations have a very important decision to make. Should they faithfully adapt from the source material, which drew so many fans in the first place? Or should they use their professional judgement to take creative license and do what they think is best for adapting to an anime series?

Staying on the Beaten Path

ET captcha Fullmetal Alchemist Staying on the Beaten Path

Let’s talk about some series’ that have been faithfully adapted, with minimal deviations in terms of overall plot, especially when it comes to the ending, and how fans reacted. Generally speaking, fans of the source material are appreciative of faithful adaptations, because that’s what reeled them in originally. Think long-running shows like One Piece, or adaptations of less lengthy, ongoing series’ like Gin no Saji. Faithful adaptations bring worlds and characters you love to life in ways you might not have been able to realize. Of course, there are exceptions. The first series I wanted to mention was Monster, which I have written about at length in other articles on the site, and will admit is one of my favorite shows (and a series I hope to tackle, once I get through my constantly-expanding manga library). Fans of both the show and the manga agree that it is an incredibly faithful adaptation from the source material, in terms of overall plot arc (including the chilling, ambiguous ending), and character development that takes place throughout the series. As a viewer, I found the anime captivating; the music is haunting, the voice acting and art style suit the dark, almost nihilistic themes of the narrative, and the production values speak for themselves. But even I have to admit that there are times where scenes seem to drag, and fan consensus is that moments that felt perfectly at home in a more static medium felt cumbersome when translated to something more dynamic. In manga, thoughts and exposition take place on the page in a way that makes sense, and manage to contain the same feeling of movement as more action packed scenes containing a lot of dialogue. Generally speaking, those same scenes end up feeling like fillers, even if they give valuable insight into character motivation, or potential plot developments, when included in anime. Think of things like voice overs in Dragonball while a character is charging for their deus ex machina-style ultimate attack, or the three-episode arc in Attack on Titan involving a startling revelation, Eren, and a boatload of cannons. It just doesn’t have the same narrative effect when translated from page to screen, and the same can be felt in some of the exchanges in Monster. Then, of course, there’s Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which picked up the pieces left by the original run (more on that later). Devotees to the source material and the original run breathed a collective sigh of relief when the show was announced, and responded incredibly positively to that iteration of the series. By that point, the manga had finished and the show could more faithfully follow the plot, giving everyone much-needed closure for characters they had invested so much of themselves in.

Uncharted Waters

I teased moments ago about the original run of Fullmetal Alchemist for a reason. Occasionally a manga series will be adapted before it has come to its natural conclusion. This can have problematic results when the production of a show catches up with (or even surpasses) the production of the source material. It’s a very big moment of truth for a series, because the author of the source material can divulge information about upcoming story developments to the production team of the show (at the risk of upsetting fans at the thought of “spoiling” the series…think HBO’s current situation with the insanely popular Game of Thrones series). Or the same production team can wander off the beaten path to flex their own narrative creativity, while attempting to remain true to what brought fans of the original in the first place. In the case of Fullmetal Alchemist, both those that had migrated and those who were newly captured were baffled by the late-game shift in quality, especially when it came to integral moments between fan-favorite characters, and bizarre plot points. The results left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Fortunately, they had a second chance and could remedy it later, but that isn’t always the case. As a counterpoint, the adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul manages to successfully walk the razor-thin line between faithful adaptation and artistic license. The show began after the manga ended, although a prequel manga series has started since then. It is a very successful reinterpretation, capturing the characters and drama with an appropriately slick art style, while deviating from the original in moderation, and at the right times. The source material has continued to expand the world in ways that future iterations of the show (fingers crossed) can use for inspiration and motivation, and fans of both are eager to see where the show might go next.

Stick the Landing

The number one complaint when it comes to adaptation is the quality of the ending. Realizing the original ending is always great, because it transforms moments of conclusion and catharsis (or thematically appropriate ambiguity and ennui) into something greater than they were before. Likewise, fans of source material have very little to complain about when a series manages to synthesize what made the original so special, but in a way that feels fresh and modern. Take, for example, Death Note, which rocketed to the top of anime popularity polls when it was adapted after the manga had ended. It managed to capture the essence of the show and the dramatic themes that made it so compelling in a way that surprised longtime fans as much as newcomers. When interviewed in Newtype USA about the creative decisions made in the anime adaptation, director Tetsuro Araki stated that his goal was to convey aspects that “made the series interesting” instead of merely “focusing on morals or the concept of justice.” He felt comfortable playing with the events and chronology of the show because the development team approached it with appropriate finesse. Other times, it isn’t received quite so well. Take, for example, the brutal, violent wonderland that is Gantz. While fans of the show have very little to complain about in terms of the actual quality of the product that was released, the show caught up to the source material and ended in a way that felt conclusive, but perhaps a bit premature. The series continued for over eight years after the anime was released, and continued to please crowds and critics alike, leaving rabid viewers scratching their heads and wistfully wondering what could have been. And don’t even get me started on shows like Ouran High School Host Club, which reached no conclusion (forced or otherwise), and leave everyone hanging.

The Verdict

ET captcha bakuman The Verdit

Now that it’s finally time to weigh in on whether or not an adaptation has any sort of obligation when it comes to staying true to the source material, I feel conflicted. I think like most things in life, there isn’t any single golden rule that studios should adhere to, and that it makes a lot more sense to determine how you feel on a case by case basis. My answer is a tentative “yes, but it’s tricky, and creative liberties aren’t always a bad thing.” It doesn’t make sense for a license to deviate so strongly from its source material that it becomes unrecognizable. If that were the case, why share the name at all? There’s a reason certain things are chosen for adaptation when others aren’t, and it’s important for studios to understand fan expectation, while still striving for creative freedom. While it isn’t necessarily always the case with anime, some of my favorite movies and shows have deviated from their source material in significant and exciting ways. The Lord of the Rings films captured everything I loved about the books, and managed to keep the romanticism inherent in its setting and characters, while making it accessible enough for modern audiences. Previously mentioned, Game of Thrones has kept all of the grit and heart-wrenching twists devotees came to expect, while giving screen time to understated or completely invented characters in a way that fleshed out the world, and made it feel even more authentic. That same approach can be just as effective when adapting manga. It just requires a robust creative team that pays a lot of attention to detail.

Conclusion

What do you think? Is it sacrilege to deviate from source material? Should an anime be evaluated independently from the manga that it’s based on? What are some of the most successful adaptations you’ve seen, and why? Sound off in the comments, and let us know what you think.

What is a Waifu? [Definition, Meaning]

What is a Waifu?

If you’re reading this right now, on behalf of the entire anime fandom, I apologise. Welcome to the world of 2D women, where the borders between reality and fantasy are blurred. It’s a world where love requires no reciprocation and where worship constitutes a “date”. Among most anime fans, it’s regarded as a joke or a way of describing their favourite female character in a show, however there’s a far deeper and darker way in which the term is used. Some fans take the term a step (or several) further, purchasing any and all merchandise involving a single character from a show. Supported by the anime merchandise industry, some otaku will go on to purchase wall scrolls, body pillows, figures and anything else they can find that relates to the character of their uncertain affection. Basically, once you’ve gone this far, you really can’t go back. For the particularly strange, there’s even an event known as “Dinner with Waifu” or “Yome To No Bansan” where users post images of their dates with their waifus, usually on Christmas or Valentine's Day. Occasionally they’ll seat a body pillow on the opposite chair or even place a monitor on the dining table. It’s a charming sentiment, but the appeal doesn’t last long after your parents disown you.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Waifu Origins

Despite the endearment of pictures being an age old concept, the term “waifu” is actually fairly recent, originally being popularised in 2002 by Azumanga Daioh with the term being a comedic mistranslation of “My Wife”. The term was used either as a term of endearment or a way of mocking obsessive users on imageboards. Later in the decade, the term started referring more to a romantic obsession with a character, whether jokingly or seriously.

Okay, got your helmet on? Good, make sure it’s strapped on tight. We’re heading into a battlefield. Neon Genesis Evangelion was the site of one of the early waifu wars, with factions forming around characters such as Asuka, Misato and Rei. Apparently the show itself was about robots or something, but the real focus is this clash of wills between these characters which still divides the internet today. Of course, Asuka is the only real best girl and anyone supporting Rei is basically the scum of society, but it is of course the responsibility of the right to correct the wrong. But more importantly, Neon Genesis Evangelion showed that the connection between a viewer and a character can happen in any show. Even one where the protagonist has more interest in a bloke with a piano.

Mai Husbando

But don’t worry if you’re not into 2D girls, there’s a place in hell for you too with the term “Husbando”. Adopting the same principles, a husbando is a male character that women will form romantic attachments to, through the barrier of a screen. Not to be confused with the fujoshi fandom, this group of people would rather pair themselves with their beloved 2D character than let anyone else have them.

Free! Iwatobi Swim Club

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2013 - September 2013 "]

Ever since the first PV, fans haven’t been able to get enough of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club and its subsequent sequels. Throw the Hetalia fandom out of the window and let the Ouran High School Host Club fandom follow, because the Free! support worldwide was crazy. Occasionally pandering, this sports series knew exactly what it was in for and achieved it to great success. Whether it’s the young and energetic Nagisa, the mature and sensible Makoto or the stoic and handsome Haruka, there’s always a husbando to be found within Free! It’s almost tragic that despite female lead, Gou fawning over their muscles, she’s competing with the entire female side of the internet for their love. Not that it’d ever be reciprocated, but Kyoto Animation merchandising has capitalised quite heavily on this fact, offering merchandise for all and any of the characters.

The Seasonal Waifu

There’s a big difference between “Best Girl” or “Waifu Material” and “Waifu” and for your safety on the internet, it’s important that you get this right. You may only have one waifu. There is no bigamy with your waifu and is regarded as a sin on some imageboards. However, ‘divorcing’ from your waifu is also regarded lowly and those that go through 2D anime girls at a rapid pace are regarded as having “Seasonal Waifus”. It’s a silly idea of course, but if you’re serious enough for a waifu, the internet will be serious about you keeping them.

Monster Musume (Everyday Life with Monster Girls)

Monster Musume dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2015 - September 2015 "]

Monster Musume was a prime example of waifu infidelity as anime fans abandoned their 2D better halves in place of younger, prettier, half-monster girls. The thing with harem shows like this is that they’re designed and marketed in a way that commands its audience to make a choice and select their favourite character out of the bunch. At Summer Comiket 2015, the entire stock of 7 metre long Miia body pillow covers costing $800 were sold out within the first hour of the event. The series, much like other harem shows boasts character songs, with each track being a different genre of music, calling upon fans to support a certain character by buying their single. Through comedy and charm, these characters call upon feeble minds to abandon their current waifus and be seduced into a seasonal trend. Descending into a cesspool of villainy, these scumbags will abandon their poor innocent wai- Sorry, I’m taking this a bit too seriously, aren’t I?

Conclusion

So that is the waifu fandom, one of the stranger, yet popular sides of the internet. Even if you’re not planning on obsessively buying merchandise so as to honour your favourite anime character, it’s important that you know the term anyways, as it’s certainly a common one that you’re sure to be exposed to, no matter where you go. It’s kind of charming in a strange way to see people get so attached to characters. Just don’t get attached to Tsugumi Harudori from Soul Eater Not. She’s my waifu.

What is Oppai? [Meaning, definition]

Shidare Hotaru dagashi kashi wallpaper

Intro

If you've ever tuned into anime, you've more than likely come across various characters who seem to have a well endowed persona so to speak. For decades, oppai has been the center of attention in various anime series ranging from classics such as Lupin, to the more recent such as Dagashi Kashi. While the term itself is used more predominantly among the anime culture, almost everyone within Japan is aware of the term and use it very openly. It's not a derogatory word by any means, but more so a playful word to “emphasize” the meaning. Not only that, but the word has a nice sound to it when said correctly. Many children find it easier to say than other well known phrases in Japan, which add more to its popularity. So you're probably wondering, what does the term mean anyway? Perhaps you already know, but there is more to the term than you might expect. Honey's Anime is here to give you the breakdown and elaborate on what oppai truly means. So this brings us to the first definition that many of us are aware of, and most likely come across in more than one anime. In popular culture, oppai refers to a woman who is well developed. She has been blessed with a cup size that is much larger than most average women, and makes sure to expose them in a sultry way. The term is loosely used among the more otaku friendly community, since it's often thrown around all throughout anime and manga. In television, the term is used in a more relaxed and slightly reserved fashion, since in Japan maintaining a good image is of the utmost importance.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Large breasts

Ecchi anime are always known to express its love to the oppai, and many that tune in are always in for a treat. To some, the term oppai may come across as negative but, it's not insulting by any means. The other more common term “mune” is used frequently on television but still refers to a woman's breasts. Oppai is just a slang term to really bring out the full meaning of a woman who has been bestowed with larger than normal assets. Oppai also comes from the term “ippai” which means “a lot of” something. In this case, oppai means a lot of chest. On average, the common size of a woman's gifts are usually between an A cup to E cup, with various regions in Japan having a mixed proportion. According to 2012 data taken from Japanese cosmetics site “LC Love Cosmetic” (www.lovecosmetic.jp), the average cup size in Kanto region is a C cup, while in upper parts of Japan it rises to E. The lowest statistic was in Saitama, with A-cup being the most prevalent. So now this brings us to the anime themselves, and which ones we think truly bring out the ecchi and sexy in all meaning.

High school DxD

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 6, 2012 – March 23, 2012 "]

High School DxD is a story that celebrates the world of harem, a term that originated in Turkey which refers to a grouping of many women under one roof. In this series, not only do we get to see the main character Issei live his perverted dream of being surrounded by voluptuous women, but we also get to see some cool action scenes with supernatural creatures. The show begins with Issei being killed by an angel, who is then brought back to life as a devil by Rias. The world he now lives in has been corrupted and attacked by creatures, and so he and his new comrades must fight to become the strongest creatures and live out his harem dream. Now this show really embodies the whole term oppai in every fashion, as we are constantly gifted with scenes of bouncing beauties on screen. Rias and her friends all seem to express themselves in a huge way, not only with their features but also their personalities. Looking at Rias you can certainly say her cup size is beyond that of the norm, especially in relation to reality. They are certainly more than one can handle, and seem to weigh more than would one imagine. The show itself still does come with its share of entertainment, as we are humored by Issei's lust for the women around him, and the action that takes place in fights. This is a must see for those who enjoy bags of fun and excitement.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichujou [ Everyday life with monster girls]

Monster Musume dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 8, 2015 -September 23, 2015 "]

Monster musume is a show that truly shows off a wide variety of sizable characters, who have different personalities to bring enjoyment to those watching. It stars Kurusu, a volunteer for the government exchange program. His world suddenly turns from weird to really twisted when his exchange partner is a slithery, yet well shaped woman named Miia. From here, the story grows in size much like the characters that follow in the series. One great example is the half horse half beauty by the name of Centorea. The show really does a great job of pointing out that it's goal is to put close attention to the lustful relationship that Kurusu has with his partners, but to also embrace the large sizes of each character that pops in. Papi unfortunately didn't make the cut. The ranges go from Papi size all the way to sizes that would probably be bigger than the human skull. Nonetheless this anime is packed full of fun and humor, that really just go to show the value of relationships, and how it's always important to stick together and look out for each other. A really great anime for those who want a laugh and some truly voluptuous women in one serving.

The tease

There are moments in anime, when we expect to see lots of skin but then end up with nothing but empty hopes. It's another reason why oppai is so popular, simply because we envision everything about what we see. When we are acquainted with a woman who wears clothing that really show off her “curves”, we fall into a state of imagination. That is also a major selling point in most popular anime, because the aim is to lure you in and make sure you stay there as long as possible. This can also fall into the category of men as well, especially in bishounen anime. A great example for females would be anime like Free! where male “oppai” is presented to women in a flirtatious way, and serve as a fantasy for the viewer. Both men and women can fantasize about their favorite characters, but more or less still enjoy the entertainment the anime truly provides.

Prison School

prison school meiko shiraki item wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 11, 2015 – September 26, 2015 "]

This brings us to Prison School, one of the more popular anime of the summer 2015 season. The story is about four men who seek enrollment in a female only academy, only to be framed for their misbehavior and are led to a prison within the school grounds. From there all of the fun really starts to erupt, as we are graced with many a breast and extremely funny scenes. While the premise of the show isn't really to show off a plethora of bust, they are certainly teased all throughout. One great example is female security guard, Meiko. Anytime she makes a move on one of the male characters, we are given a taste of what she has to offer under her uniform. One scene is when we see Meiko out of her uniform for the first time, working out in her room. We see her sweating bullets, and her chest bouncing but unfortunately, much of it is shadowed out and so our minds are left in bewilderment as to what lies underneath. Another great example is when Meiko took part in an arm wrestle competition with the four men in jail, and all we could notice were her assets directly in front of us. This is a smart strategy by the creators, since it forces us to create an extra scene in our minds and keep us guessing. It's more or less the juxtaposition that really becomes the attraction. We highly recommend checking out Prison School to get a much better view of what we mean.

Oppai will forever be etched in the minds of everyone for all eternity, and so ecchi anime will continue to rise in popularity so long as we exist. With a generous amount of sexy oppai to go around, there's no telling what we'll see next. We do hope you found this to be entertaining, both as a male and female respectively. If you have any other anime that really show off a lot of skin, be sure to leave your choices in the comments section! As always, for your sweet anime fill, keep it locked here at Honey's Anime.

ET Is Anime Really Expensive Image 4
[ad_top1]

A continuing and undying controversy amongst mostly US (and some European) fans is, is anime really expensive? A good number of fans justify torrenting anime (regardless of license) due to this argument, while others follow the basic rule of as long as it is not officially licensed in their country. But you are here not to read that, you are here to read the answer to today’s question and see for yourself whether anime truly is expensive or not.

DVD/Blu-ray Price Comparisons

sailormoon ET Is Anime Really Expensive Image 1

For starters, let's compare anime Blu-ray and DVD prices between America and Japan. As a foundation, I will use some DVD and Blu-ray packages of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Kai to make a comparison. For part 1 to season 1 of the first Sailor Moon anime adaptation, the US price is listed from $17 to $21 on the American Amazon site. On the Japan site, the Japanese set is sold at ¥18,800. The current exchange rate averages around ¥118 to $1 upon publication of this editorial. So in comparison to buying the Japanese set, you're saving around $140 if you buy American! Keep in mind the Japanese release is Japanese audio only, has no English subs, and will NOT be compatible with non-Japanese, or region 2 DVD players.

Dragon Ball ET Is Anime Really Expensive Image 1.5

With Blu-ray prices, let's use Dragon Ball Kai as an example. For the Cell saga, American viewers can buy the Blu-ray off Amazon for $30 while viewers such as myself in Japan have to pay 19,500 yen!!! US fans are saving $135 if they buy local! However, the good news is if you want a Blu-ray anime that is Japan exclusive, both Japanese and American Blu-ray players (most notably PS3 and PS4 consoles) can play each other’s Blu-ray discs! So in some sense depending on what you buy, you are getting your money’s worth!

Why are anime discs expensive in Japan?

ET Is Anime Really Expensive Image 2

As for those astronomical Japanese prices, those have been their prices since the VHS days, and VHS copies on average (in both Japan and the US) would have two episodes! But why do Japanese DVD and Blu-rays (and VHS back in the day) charge so much? Some residents and Japanese natives will just joke because Japan is not as cheap to live in. Other people will say because fans are crazy enough to pay those prices. As a resident of Japan, I cannot deny those claims but there are distinct reasons for this. For starters, it's because the television industries between Japan and the US are run completely different, along with their differences in economical practices between both countries. With American studios, they make a pilot/pitch of a show to a network, the network decides to test it out and if it goes well, the networks will air it and studios can get their money from the network as opposed to the reverse, which is the practice in Japan. In Japan, the studio makes a show and they pay a network to air it. Because of those respective costs, the studios need to make a profit and pricing high in DVDs, Blu-rays and other merchandise, is how the studios receive those profits, in order to make up for other miscellaneous production fees. The benefit to this practice is that the studios have more creative freedom. In American television, networks and studios have a more hand-in-hand relationship. Because of the American practice, networks also have an influence of the creative directions of their programming. Yes, anime productions do get sponsorships but it’s not as emphasized as it is in US TV where there is more commercial time compared to Japanese broadcasts, which also contributes to the difference in costs.

Rental Markets in Japan and other outdated economic practices

ET Is Anime Really ExpensiveImage 3

Another major factor contributing to the Japanese prices is based on very outdated marketing practices to the American home video market. While video rentals have gone the way of the dinosaurs in the US thanks to cheap and convenient streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, the rental market in Japan is still relatively strong. Despite Japan’s strong lead in technology, foreign anime fans, and Japan enthusiasts, need to remember some significant societal factors. Mainly, Japan (as with many other first world countries) has been facing a declining birthrate and in turn, their elderly population (and having one of the longest life spans in the world) has been progressively increasing the past twenty years. Because the elderly (and increasing majority) population is more used to older technologies such as fax machines (yes, they still use fax machines here) as opposed to e-mail, streaming services have slowly caught on but not enough to put the rental market out of business yet. I have seen some rental shops that still carry VHS because the elderly population in those areas is high. When the VHS technology was first introduced around the world over 40 years ago, the initial prices could have been as high as $100 just about anywhere, and the entertainment industry did not expect it to evolve into a collector’s market. After accounting for inflation, that is pretty expensive. Home video in general started as an exclusive market and got its popularity through rentals, as did Japan. Video rental outlets are how both US and Japanese industries made their money in those days. Despite being long gone in America, as previously stated, Japan still continues this practice because the elderly population is still active in keeping this method alive. Because money is still being made through rentals, Japan can still sell Blu-rays and DVDs at prices that are meant to be affordable by rental stores. Another factor to why Japanese prices are high is also an effect from their old economic prosperous times between the 1970s and 1980s. Japan was such a rich country in those times that citizens could waste money like water. The Japanese and Blu-ray prices also account to tell buyers they are buying a quality brand. Of course, such business practices are questionable in some countries.

US Animeconomics (is this Honey’s original?)

As some of you readers may know, when a US anime company licenses an anime, they pay a license fee to the original studio. It can cost tens of dollars per episode, and these fees are treated like revenue to the Japanese company. So in essence, the Japanese companies already made their money off the licensing fee and it is up to the foreign licensing company to figure out how they can make up for it through DVD sales. Of course, that means that US companies are within their freedom to set their own prices which is why they can sell it cheaper than the Japanese prices (and stay in range with other American DVD prices). However, there are some Japanese companies that do have American branches. One obvious example is Bandai, the company that is in association with Sunrise, which made Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop. With VIZ Media, they are a division of Shogakukan, a publishing company that Licensed most of Takahashi Rumiko’s works from Ranma ½ and Kyoukai no Rinne, to the most recent popular series, One Punch Man. So because of this particular ownership, works by the parent Japanese companies are in essence, automatically licensed through their American branches.

Some food for thought

ET Is Anime Really Expensive Image 4

US fans will probably always claim that anime is expensive, but here is something to put in perspective. Maybe some of you readers are new to anime, and some of you have been following for more than twenty years such as myself. Yes, averagely, a 20-30 episode disc set on either DVD or Blu-ray can range from $20-$40. In addition, you are also getting bonus content (which can consist of behind the scenes footage, bonus footage, original OP/EDs, making of the series, commentary, etc.), and dual (or maybe even triple) lingual options with high-grade screen and sound quality. To help further inform either rookies or younger fans of anime, let's use an oldie called Bubblegum Crisis to talk about how cheap anime in the US has become in twenty years. Back in the VHS days, when that anime was released one episode per tape, costs could range from $45 for dub to $75 for subs on average. Yes, watching subtitled anime was a novelty back then to some degree due to these differences in price. With 1 episodes per tape for an 8 episode OVA series, fans in those days paid $360-$600 for the whole series! Now try to adjust that after inflation between now and 1995. As for why the prices were that high, it goes back to when the VHS market was mostly dependent on rentals, then DVDs changed the game from the year 2000 when the technology gave fans options that were dreams. Getting Duo audio back then was a big deal and the prices to fans at the time (I remember buying a 5 episode Gundam Wing DVD for $20) was considered groundbreaking. When looking at the DVD and Blu-ray prices for Bubblegum Crisis, the DVD set for the WHOLE series goes for $35, or $130 for the Blu-ray premium package! For the DVD set of the whole series, you are paying $10 less than a one episode VHS tape at minimum! For the Blu-ray, buyers are paying way less than half for the whole series for the VHS set during that initial release!

How Do You Feel?

With the evolution of media today, anime fans now have numerous opportunities to explore numerous titles through mainstream streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, or the anime exclusive Crunchyroll, which releases anime almost one hour after it airs in Japan. Each service costs $10 a month and you can watch on an unlimited basis (based on region licensing). Compare $10 a month and how your binge watching would have cost compared to video rental. But these services are for another future Editorial Tuesday, for another time. For some of you non-Americans or non-Japanese fans, what are the prices and availability of anime in your respective nations of residence? For my fellow Americans, do you still think anime is still expensive? Whatever info you got, please share it in the comments!

[Editorial Tuesday] Anime Streaming Sites: Legal vs Illegal

Admit it, we’ve all dabbled in illegal streaming sites at some point. Much of it was due to a lack of easy access to anime that we like and want to watch, especially for those of us who started watching anime more than 10 years ago. Many of the TV channels that we can find in our countries usually have very few anime available for us to watch and often times they aren’t even subbed, which a majority of the population prefers. Importing the Blu-ray/DVD version of the anime can be very costly, not just for the price of the discs themselves but they’re import price as well. This holds true for many forms of media in fact. Other shows, such as simple dramas to even movies, that feature in other countries can be very expensive to purchase and many find it not worth the purchase price. Therefore, a lot of people use illegal streaming sites to view these forms of media and anime. This used to be an understandable position to take. But with the advent of the Internet as a medium to convey filmographic material, that no longer has to be the case. There are such things as legal streaming sites nowadays, with official licensing rights to the anime themselves. Furthermore, with their subscription based services, it is much more worth it to simply subscribe than to buy the anime outright. Here at Honey’s Anime, we explore the reasons why you should get your anime fix from legal streaming sites such as Crunchyroll, Daisuki, FUNimation, Hulu or Netflix, instead of illegal streaming sites.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Official vs Unofficial Translations

ET FateStay Night Unlimited Blade Works 1. Official v Unofficial

Unofficial versions of anime often rely on fansub teams to translate, encode and sub the anime upon release in order to create a working “product” that viewers over the internet can watch. This process involves someone getting a raw version of the anime, most times illegally by directly recording the anime or some other source, and the fansub team will then work on a short schedule to get the translated version out for people to watch. This process is bad for a number of reasons. The most obvious of reasons would be the illegality of the whole thing, but we will explore more on this topic further in the article. The emphasis here is on the final product itself. Unofficial fansub are often times the work of a team of regular people who have regular lives and jobs. They’re not professionals who know for sure what they are doing or have the full breathe of knowledge needed to accurately translate an anime into sub form. In the process of translation through the fansub teams, many cultural nuances and idioms that would have been more concisely translated by a full professional team can be lost in translation, literally. Famous memes such as “People die when they are killed” are spawned from such mistranslations, when the original context of the anime relies on the user's understanding of the Japanese language to fully comprehend. Official sites not only have a fully dedicated team that are paid to translate anime as their day job, the fact that they are being paid also suggests that they have the qualifications needed to even be hired by the companies that own the sites. Furthermore, the official sites often have access to the original video in full HD quality, leading to a more palatable final product with official subtitles that are more pleasing to watch visually. Just imagine watching the works of Ufotable or A-1 Pictures in full HD, wherever and whenever you want.

Ease of Access

ET onepiece 3. Ease of Access

It isn’t easy to get access to illegal versions of subbed anime most of the time. Those who can get such copies are usually fairly intimate with how the whole process works, and finding them can be very daunting for the uninitiated to the anime fandom of the internet. The usual way that is taken would be to access the illegal streaming sites and hope that they have the anime that the user wants to watch. This often presents the conundrum of being unable to watch the anime due to how these sites skirt the edge of the law. Instead of directly hosting the videos on their server, these sites use third party players in order to showcase the anime. This allows them to get away with not actually have the anime on their site but still being accessible on the site itself. However, third party players are often unreliable and the videos get taken down often. Imagine having an anime binge and not being able to find the next episode, leading to massive amounts of frustration. Another way to get access is through the process of torrenting. Torrenting is often denotative of piracy and piracy is a crime in most commonwealth countries, where a majority of anime fans come from. Therefore, not only is torrenting a technically difficult process to utilise, it is illegal as well. In the United States, the act of pirating videos, including anime, can carry a penalty of $250,000, 5 years in jail and a felony record. Is that worth it just to get anime for free? On the other hand, official streaming sites have a full and easily accessible database with all variations of quality a user needs to adjust to his network speed, from 360p to 1080p. They also boast many utilities that can be helpful to the user, such as the episode synopsis and auto play of the anime (great for binge watching!). There are very little hiccups that can come from using legal streaming sites, leaving viewers with more time to watch anime rather than to deal with the tedious process of getting unofficial versions.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Speed of Translation

As stated earlier, the official sites license the anime from the publisher or studio and either translate the anime from there or get the subbed version from the studio. It can vary from anime to anime as each studio works differently. Regardless, the releases of the official versions are done by people who are paid to work around the clock in order to bring out the official version as soon as humanly possible and immediately upon posting it on the site, users can usually get notifications that the anime they are currently following has been updated. Unofficial fansubs are done by a group of people with a common interest in anime. These fansubbers are often unpaid and are done by regular people during their off time. After getting the anime from a dubious source, the work is put through a multistage process that involves the anime passing from person to person, whether to translate or to handle the encoding of the video. This is an understandable process because these people don’t stay within commutable distance from each other and can often be from different countries. However, it is also extremely time consuming to translate anime in such a manner. Not only do the fansub teams have real jobs and lives to get back to, passing it from person to person can only mean that the process would take far longer than an official translation team. In a full team, they usually edit the video together in the same working area and in doing so, they are able to handle all stages of the anime translating process in a speedy manner. Furthermore, without the strings attached to the earlier subtitle, ease of access, the official versions simply have to be posted on the legal streaming sites without fuss or worry and are immediately watchable from their servers. The illegal versions have to be uploaded multiple times on third party players or be put up for torrenting, which is once again, time consuming. Using the legal versions is just faster and easier, and who doesn’t want that?

Illegality

ET Prison School 4. Illegality

Piracy is illegal. Not only does it come with a jail sentence and penalty, in countries like the United States it comes with a felony record as well. By viewing, downloading and pirating the illegal versions that come in torrenting or streaming sites, you are putting yourself at risk of civil and criminal legal proceedings. Not only can these leave a person destitute and lose many years to the prison system, the record that comes with it can bar a person from many education and employment opportunities. The ones at greater risk to this process are the fansub teams who produce the illegal versions of anime. While downloading and viewing for personal pleasure is already bad, imagine what sharing the illegal copies on the internet carries with it! By having an over reliance on these teams, they are made to share what is essentially thousands of episodes of anime over the internet. An example of why this can be damning is the following case in the United States. A former Ph.D student in the States was recently made to pay the fine of $675,000 in total for the downloading, streaming and/or sharing of songs on the internet. The fine carried for each song is $22,500 each. With 30 songs being used to implicate and prosecute him, it adds up to the hefty amount above that could be used to feed a family of four for 5 years. Imagine the consequences this can have for the fansub teams. The student has already incurred more than half a million in fines for sharing 30 songs illegally. These teams share thousands of episodes in order to sate everyone’s desire for more anime. Not only is watching anime this way putting ourselves at risk, but the teams that are relied on can have their entire lives taken away just because they’re trying to please the masses.

Supporting the Studios

ET tonari no totoro 5. Support the Studios

Watching anime on the illegal streaming sites can be taxing on the site’s servers. This is often supplemented by the adverts that are present on such sites. The income from the adverts pay for the servers used and the site owners can even profit from such adverts. Overall, it forms a nice little ecosystem for the user and site owner, right? Not really. The adverts can often be cumbersome and distracting, giving a dreary user interfaces peppered with banners of weird products or obviously illegal surveys. This is further compounded with pop-up ads that wish to inform you that there are hot lonely singles in your area who really want to do the horizontal tango with you. The more tedious the adverts, the more money the owner gets each time one is brought to your attention. If you were the owner, wouldn’t you put as many as possible? The worst caveat that appears with this “ecosystem” comes with the division of profits, or lack thereof. The money goes to the people who maintain the sites. It does not get shared with the studios who produced the anime we love at all. This is obviously because these sites are illegal to begin with and profit from doing nothing more than sharing the illegal versions. It can be hard to find one season of an anime. Often times, anime that are wildly popular still get discontinued purely from a lack of funding. This is due to the anime being watched through illegal means as opposed to buying the DVD or Blu-ray version of the product. Since the studios don’t receive the money, they don’t have the funds required to make another season of the anime, leaving us hanging. However, supporting the anime can be costly. Buying the Blu-ray and importing it can be a costly process, and often times, it’s even harder to find a subbed version. Buying the figurines or official products of the anime can also potentially bankrupt the fan as well. So how can one support the studios without losing all financial stability? By subscribing to the legal streaming sites. The subscription fees of these sites are often reasonable to upkeep with and they provide the benefits that have been listed throughout the article. Due to the licensing agreements that these sites have with the studios, the studios are paid a portion of these subscription fees in return for licensing the anime. In watching anime on the streaming sites, you are supporting all our favourite studios directly with cold hard cash, and this allows them to keep making the very anime that we know and love!

Concluding paragraph

There is no question that legal sites have all the advantages over an illegal site. There are literally no downsides to using a legal site, and doing so is completely risk free to the user. Getting the full HD version of an anime subbed the very same day it’s released in Japan is great as well. Most importantly of all, it gives us a cheap way to support the studios that we like, allowing the anime industry to grow and expand. This can only be good for anime fans as more anime is released, the bigger the industry is as a whole. Support the legal streaming sites! (Or by the DVD/Blu-ray if you want to!) Official Sites you can checkout: Crunchyroll, Netflix, Daisuki, FUNimation and Hulu. There are more, but these are some to start you off with.

[Editorial Tuesday] Most Interesting Animation Techniques

After nearly half a century of growth, anime has secured recognition as a medium and art form distinct from all others. However, Japanese animation is not necessarily dependent on a single process, and is still evolving today with new techniques. As studios get more comfortable with allowing new creative input in their works, we anime fans have a lot to look forward to. Today, Honey’s Anime presents to you a short reader starting with some general knowledge of how Japanese animation works, and then moves on to introducing a few of the newer techniques utilised in anime production.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Basic Know-Hows of Japanese Animation

1. Basic know-hows of Japanese animation SHIROBAKO
[sourceLink asin="" text="" url="" ]

What you see as movement in anime (and cartoons!) are really a series of pictures that are displayed and swapped in a really rapid pace. The interchanging frames of a character’s movement or the shifting state of a background creates the illusion of movement, meaning that countless numbers of these pictures are needed for motion in anime to be convincing. The anime industry makes distinct two main categories for this process: key animation, that contain the essentials of an object or person’s motion, and in-between animation that connect two key frames so that the motion flows properly. It is not uncommon for the pictures (or key frames and in-between frames, to be technical) to be worked on by different groups or people entirely, rather than for everything to be burdened by one single company. Traditionally, these frames are drawn on cels, which are plastic sheets that the needed images are etched and painted on before they are all arranged inside a machine that moves them really quickly in front of a transparent screen. A camera records the final process and creates the first copy of the anime. Cels have since been entirely replaced by paper drawings now that digital recording and editing have become commonplace, with animation becoming a more flexible process as more advanced techniques come into play.

Anime in the Digital Age

2. Anime in the Digital Age Kara no Kyoukai Epilogue
[sourceLink asin="" text="" url="" ]

Colour coordination and editing has become essential components of what makes it to the final cut of an anime episode. It is important to note that even though TV anime series are progressively looking better each year, the budget they receive and not necessarily increasing proportionally to support the heightening quality. Thus, production studios have through the times felt compelled to pursue avenues that are less expensive than having animators draw everything. Thankfully, most studios have nailed down by now the appropriate compromises to make in order to still turn out decent looking anime. Take the opening of this season’s Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo. While more attention is generally put into the quality of the opening of a TV anime on average than the rest of the show, Konosuba’s opening does a good job of exhibiting all the common elements used to add onto the engagement of hand drawn frames in today’s anime. None of the cuts particularly stand out from the visible amount of effort put into the drawings, there is enough movement in its duration that it does not feel boring to watch. Static frames are made more engaging through lighting effects and manipulation of shadows. The direction of each segment (and the transitions between them) takes careful account the effect the background music has. Perhaps most importantly, moments of character movement are carefully manufactured to express their personality traits and other hooks are snuck in to capture the audience’s interest. Projects done by top studios or outsourced to experienced staff members can still look extremely well-put together, albeit almost never to the quality of a theatrical release. Studio ufotable and Kyoto Animation are known to set the standard for how TV anime is supposed to look when everything mentioned above is done as close to perfection as can be reasonably expected, and does so while consistently employing animators top level animators. No one can expect most studios today to reach the quality of Hyouka or any of the Fate franchise anime adaptations simply because of how far ahead of their time they were. Instead, studios likes PA Works and J.C. Staff figured out their capabilities and developed their own styles based on the type of series they animate, whether it is the extraordinary attention they put on lighting effects and art direction or to tastefully bring popular Light Novel characters through endearing (and calculated) cuts of animation.

Computer-Generated imagery (CGi)

3. Computer-generated Imagery Girls and Panzer Heartful Tank Disc Picture Drama
[sourceLink asin="" text="" url="" ]

Having explained how hand-drawn animation works and how it remains central in anime production today, hopefully you will find the newer techniques to be all the more interesting. Among the prominent secondary forms of animation is definitely the uses of CGi, of which it is useful to discuss by splitting them into two different mindsets. Most uses of CGi is to either concurrently augment scenes of hand-drawn animation or to animate a relatively short cut in between two other cuts that are hand-animated. In both cases, the viewer is not supposed to recognise the CGi as a distinct element from the usual look of the show. The CGi serves as a shortcut method to create motions or objects that are too difficult to draw in a short time frame. In other words, CGi is often a less costly way to accomplish what hand-drawn animators can also do. Examples of this would be this season’s Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm, in which some cuts during matches of the fictional Flying Circus sport is done through CGi, and not particularly carefully either as they tend to stick out rather ungracefully. Higher budget productions like Sunrise’s Gundam Unicorn OVA series use CGi in their transformation and fight scenes, but to a comparatively greater degree of competence. The makers of the criminally underrated Girls und Panzer proves to be especially proficient at using CGi through creative directing decisions and immaculate attention to details when integrating a 3D tank model into a plane of 2D hand-drawn background and characters. A basic comparison between a sports match scene of Girls und Panzer and Aokana shows how a clearly thought out use of CGi looks much less jarring than a more hastily put-together affair. Even if it is ultimately a resource management maneuver for most companies to use CGi this way, the 2010s have shown that it can look very good and will probably continue to look better in the coming future. The other mindset is to treat CGi as an outlet for creative ideas just like hand-drawn animation, and to make it central to an entire anime project. As many American cartoon film productions have already fully embraced CGi as the next step in animated films, Japan has certainly been unable to ignore the potential that is there. However, in reality this is rarely the case, as can be seen by Rakuen Tsuihou: Expelled from Paradise being the latest project that does so and is not particularly flattering in terms of showing the strengths of CGi-based anime products. However, as the anime industry continues to evolve and adapt, it is likely that more talented CGi-reliant directors will finally have their turn in paving their own breakthrough.

The Ghibli Way

4. The Ghibli Way The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
[sourceLink asin="" text="" url="" ]

Studio Ghibli, more specifically its iconic director Hayao Miyazaki, is known for being a proponent for Japanese animation films that are entirely made through the painstaking drawings of its in-house animators with Miyazaki himself personally checking every single frame. Although this ensures the quality for each individual frame, the sheer manpower and time required makes this one of the most expensive ways to create anime. While Miyazaki has occasionally made compromises since the making of ‘Princess Mononoke’, in which CGi was implemented to enhance certain scenes, his style is still clearly defined in most of his older films and also in the more recent ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea’. He himself is somewhat of an icon for animators, representing the old guards for the purists who value hand-drawn animation above all else. However, do not be fooled; Miyazaki’s consistency and lack of variance in terms of how he approaches the animation process is a strength that lets him focus on the substance of his films. There is a definite sense of improvement as he adapts to newer theatrical formats and make use of the greater creative freedom and budgets he is allocated, but there is no fundamental change from the philosophy of doing as much as possible with hand-drawn animation. Studio Ghibli under the lead of Miyazaki will probably be remembered for the long coming years as a creative unit that aspired and realised their imaginations regardless of all obstacles.

Rotoscoping

5. Rotoscoping Flowers of Evil
[sourceLink asin="" text="" url="" ]

Remember Aku no Hana from 2013? Devastated fans of the manga certainly did, when the characters in the anime was revealed to look absolutely nothing like their manga counterparts. This was mainly due to the rotoscoping techniques employed to formulate their dimensions and motions, of which departs heavily from the romanticised norms of hand-drawn animation. Rotoscoping can be summarised as thus: the animator records footage of live-action motion and then traces over it to create the frames used for the final products. Essentially, it is a way to create a frame of reference for motion in anime that is supposed to reflect what real-life looks life. However, there is a world of difference between how different anime executes the use of rotoscoping. For instance, the aforementioned Aku no Hana was infamous for making all of its characters look unappealing (or even hideous to less tolerant viewers) in comparison to the original character designs. The decision to do so adds a sense of realism to the storytelling, making it seem as though the characters’ experiences and thoughts are something that even real-life rural-based Japanese students may go through. This comes at the heavy cost of alienating fans who expect the character designs and artistic direction of the TV series to follow the established norms in other anime adaptations of popular manga series. On the other hand, we have shows like Sakamichi no Apollon who makes use of rotoscoping to create engaging portrayals of Jazz performances. The intention for the technique to increase the realism of the experience is still here, but definitely not at the cost of pushing away unfamiliar viewers. This approach is similar to the low-key use of CGi, but is notably different in that rotoscoping can be fully compatible with the look of traditional animation without provoking viewers to make any distinctions between the two techniques; in fact, this scenario can also be seen as rotoscoping taking hand-drawn animation a step further by implementing the use of digital technology as part of the process.

Conclusion

And thus covers the surface of the basic techniques and some of the most interesting animation techniques used in anime today. If one is to look deeper into the technical side of things, there is a treasure trove of interesting tidbits that makes you appreciate the animators’ efforts all the more. Did this article help you learn something new about animation? Has one of the examples made you want to check out that anime? Let us know in the comment section below.

Himouto Umaru-chan

There is a time in our lives when, we have someone to look up to whenever we feel times of hardship. Those people come in the form of friends, coworkers, and family. For those fortunate enough to have an older sibling, then perhaps our article will remind you of that special someone. The term oniichan pops up on more than one occasion in anime, and has become a very popular word to refer to the older brother. In Japan, this word is used frequently outside of anime. The term oniichan uses what’s called Teineigo ( 丁寧語) to make the “o” on “Nii-Chan” more polite. The older brother doesn't necessarily have to relate to family, but it could also refer to close friendships. This sort of relationship if not related by blood, usually winds up in a situation where the character has been in a friendly relationship with someone for years and years. It is important to note that this relationship usually starts from a childhood friendship. An Oniichan is someone who you can look up to, for guidance and encouragement regardless of your own gender. They are the root from which we grow, because they educate on matters that we may experience throughout our lives. As you'll see later in our article, Sora from No Game No Life is a prime example of being a true oniichan. In today's article, we will travel deeper into the meaning to give you a better idea of what a big brother is capable of, and why they make such an impact on our lives.

A role model

Throughout our journeys, there are moments when we aspire to be just like someone else. Not entirely like them in the physical sense, but rather, their approach to life and their ability to overcome adversity. Oniichan are the motivator for the younger ones around them, and so it becomes his responsibility to be the right teacher to advise what's right from wrong. Many of us have at some point, sought after role models who play the sports we love, or the movies we dream of acting in. There is no greater role model however than the older brother. The older brother has experienced a large share of his life, and so his advice becomes more valuable over time, much like wine becomes more delicious over its maturity. There might be a time when you're having relationship problems, and your older brother is there to guide you through it. Perhaps you aren't receiving much allowance from your parents, so your brother slips in an extra few dollars for you to enjoy yourself. There are a handful of examples which we could use to emphasize the importance of a role model, but having an older brother to help you discover the treasures of life is invaluable.

Full Metal Alchemist

[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" October 4, 2003 – October 2, 2004 "]

If there is anyone who fits the big brother role well in every way, it most certainly has to be Edward Elric. Full Metal Alchemist stars Edward and his younger brother Alphonse, as they embark on a journey to obtain the philosopher's stone. Prior to the journey, Edward and his brother tried to resurrect their deceased mother through via alchemy. Things become disastrous when the experiment fails, which led to him losing his brother and two of his limbs. Fortunately, Edward was able to use his skillful alchemy to bind Alphonse's soul to a large suit of armor. From the beginning of the show, Edward already displayed how much of a big brother he truly is to Alphonse. He made sure to look after his brother, and that he wouldn't suffer the same fate twice. Whenever Alphonse would run into trouble, Edward would always be there to reinforce the fact that things would be fine. A great example of this is when the two enroll in the military, and Alphonse lacked the ability to stand up to Roy Mustang and the other strict officers. Edward stepped in to encourage Alphonse, that no matter what happens he would always be by his side to cover for him. Edward became a mentor for Alphonse, who became much stronger throughout the series due to his older brother's motivation to overcome adversity. Alphonse is seen as the more reserved of the two, and a bit clumsy at times. Edward on the other hand, is the more mature and level headed, who approaches everything with a strategic purpose. This contrast in character, is what really helped created a beautiful chemistry between the two, which is a beauty to watch.

Another great example of the oniichan is none other than Tooru from Hitsugi no Chaika. This a great example from the female point of view, because Tooru becomes a mentor for Chaika throughout her journey for meaning in life. Tooru is 20 while Chaika is 14, and the two develop a very strong relationship well into the series. While the two aren't related in any way, you can certainly see a chemistry between them that would make you think otherwise. Chaika is a troubled soul who often finds herself in harms way, because she is adamant on finding the clues to who her father is. Her curiosity is what gets the trio into trouble, because she often wanders off leaving Akari and Tooru to fend for themselves. Chaika walks with a coffin that comes equipped with a high powered magic sniper, that when used, can obliterate even the strongest of foes. However, she doesn't fend well for herself at times, and so this is where Tooru comes in to help bring her ponderous mind back to reality. Whenever Chaika ever feels like the world around her is crumbling, Tooru is always there to remind her that he is always there to protect her. This sense of protection gave Chaika more confidence throughout the show, and really helped to bring the two together. Chaika learned a lot from Tooru's confidence in battle, which eventually led her to overcoming her own shyness and clumsiness when under pressure, especially when collecting items to solve the mystery of her origin.

Someone to comfort you in times of need

The oniichan is someone who you can always look up to and depend on when life just isn't feeling right. In times of distress, we often lash out and create internal wars with ourselves. It's at that very moment that our older mentor steps in to ensure that everything will be fine. While no one is truly perfect by any means, oniichan depicts that of a courageous specimen who will do whatever it takes to protect those around them. Oniichan show no fear in their hearts to reach out when it really matters. No matter the issue at hand, be it about a breakup, or jumping in to save the day, oniichan are ones you should always have around no matter the circumstance. They become an influence over each and every one of us due to their confidence, and innate ability to read our feelings. In our next anime example of oniichan, we will take a look at an individual who truly defines that of an older brother protecting the ones they love.

If there is one person who truly embodies the oniichan status, it most surely is Sora and his sister Shiro. The story is about the two NEET siblings who find themselves plunged into a video game realm, who then come face to face with Tet, the god of games. Prior to this encounter, the two had become a legendary tag team and used the name “Kuuhaku” to defeat their opponents online. It was at that moment they received an email from an unknown source, challenging them to a chess match. From there, their lives changed forever. Tet welcomes the two to Disboard, a world where disputes are not solved by wars and trivial quarrels, but rather high stake games. Their new goal now is to unite all of the gamers in Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the new reigning champions of the gaming world. This is such a great example of oniichan love because right from the beginning of the show, you can see how close the two siblings are. Sora almost never leaves his younger sister behind, no matter where they go. Even when they play games together in their bedroom, Shiro sits directly in his lap as if the two were connected. When they arrive at Disboard, Shiro starts to show signs of stress and anxiety, and so Sora steps in to remind her that as long as he is around, they will never lose. In every battle they encounter Shiro makes a mistake, but Sora makes up for it by coming to her rescue, especially in the final battle with Tet. This wonderful display of sibling affection is why we decided to choose Sora as the best oniichan.

[Editorial Tuesday] Music: Setting the Mood in Anime

Hibike Euphonium wallpaper

Music plays an integral part in anime, it allows the anime to go beyond the fourth wall and reach the viewer's’ sensibilities, putting a depth of emotions in it as well. That is because music is often said to be the universal language of mankind and the language of the soul. Anyone is able to simply listen to it and truly understand the sentiments that music is trying to evoke. Be it a fast paced rock/metal track or a slow, calming classical/soft tune, music sets the mood of the anime, and truly communicates the inner emotions of the characters, or the situation in a way not even the images can’t describe. Today, we go through how some of the most popular songs in anime that depicted the mood of the whole anime series flawlessly, ranging from the Original Sound Tracks (OST), to the Openings and Endings (OPs & EDs). Firstly, we will move on to how music is used as a tool to portray and transfer emotions, setting the mood for the anime. Subsequently, we'll talk about one of the anime in which the music is really what defined it and made it popular.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Where music is used to express emotions and situations

Music is a powerful tool. Not only can it be used to tell a story, it can also be used to describe human emotions and situations. Below are some examples of where music sets the mood of an anime or a character's feelings such as a particularly sad event or a happy event.

1. Expression of emotions - Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

shigatsu wa kimi no uso wallpaper

The study of music was conceptualized in the West with the study of classical music. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso centralises on the theme of classical music. Shigatsu uses the foundational study of music to portray the development of characters using suitable famous pieces from masters such as Beethoven and Chopin to display anguish, pain and desolation of the pianist, Arima Kousei. In contrast, the pieces of virtuoso violinists such as Kriesler and Saint-Saens are performed but the subtle differences in style and technique of Kaori Miyazono shows how music is the key to the freedom of expression and how it reflects her free-spirited personality. Although what was played were excerpts of pieces, the differences between mashing the keys on the keyboard and playing elegantly are shown by the different characters which are also reflective of their personality. One of the greatest quote from this anime that stands and remains as the maxim of music is "Music transcends words". To be honest, you need not to understand Japanese or even play music to understand the emotions depicted in this anime through the melodies and tones. You can hear the anguish and the pain of Arima simply by listening and how the soul is liberated from the free-spirited playing style of Kaori. The element that defines a musician after all, is his/her own personality and how they modify the music to reflect themselves and their mood.

2. Expression of doleful events - Clannad

Clannad wallpaper CD

Clannad is a highly reputed masterpiece in the genre of slice of life anime accented with bittersweet romance. Clannad's claim to fame comes from not just its story but the background music that perfectly complements the situation whenever a pivotal event occurs during the anime. Clannad OST was composed, arranged, and produced by Jun Maeda, Shinji Orito, and Magome Togoshi. This amazing beautiful soundtrack of the anime series consists of three disc with a total of 56 songs. The BGMs resonates with the hearts of the viewers through the heart-wrenching tale of Clannad augmented by the doleful music that demonstrates the beauty of human relations blooming amidst a torrential maelstrom of complications. The exceptionally emotional OST of Clannad evokes that sense of humanity in us that is empathy. As the feelings poured out of the characters, so does the music, which blends into the raw expression of emotions of the characters. The beauty of Clannad lies not just in a perfectly crafted story but in its stunning composition of music.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

3. Expression of Energy and Hype - Action anime

The iconic ‘Only My Railgun’ by fripSide is a beloved favourite amongst anime fans being a staple of a form of music in J-pop culture. With a very fast tempo and an expertly crafted composition by Satoshi (Sat), and powerful vocals provided by Nanjo, this pop/trance track allowed fripSide to shoot to fame. This electrifying OP is synonymous with the main heroine, Misaka Mikoto - the Level 5 Electromaster in the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun the spin-off series of A Certain Magical Index

FateStay Night UBW 2nd Season Opening 2 Brave Shine

The OST of the revamped Fate/stay night: UBW contains new renditions of character themes and battle scenes. These OSTs are specific and significant to the characters that are appearing on-screen. With the final confrontation between Archer and Emiya in their Reality Marbles, the insert song for this epic battle does not fall short of expectations. ‘Last Stardust’ sung by Aimer starts off in a low pitch and then slowly ascending into a higher pitch. At its pinnacle during the chorus, the power of Aimer's vocals emanates revitalized energy with the chorus playing concurrently with Emiya finding the resolve to fight making the fight all the more epic and bringing it to a whole new level. From these two instances, you can see that music is not only reserved for emotional scenes and soft characters, but also for intense action, energetic and spirited sequences as well. There is something with hearing a rock piece or metal piece that really gets the mood going, you will instantly know that it is about to get real.

Where the Music Defines the Anime - Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown wallpaper CD

In year 2011, Guilty Crown was a much debatable anime. It was a split between the people that loved the anime, and the people that disliked the anime. Some felt that the story was underdeveloped, while some felt that the ending was just right and should've ended the way it ended. One thing was for sure, though, it was unanimous that the reason why Guilty Crown was so well-received, was the music. First OP 'My Dearest' sung by Supercell, and the second, 'The Everlasting Guilty Crown’ sung by Egoist, brought about a mad rave in the forums. It was undoubtedly dubbed the anime with the best music in the season. So what makes the music in Guilty Crown so good? First, both, the fast paced and dynamic OPs are very catchy, gets you hyped up, and being the mecha-action anime that it is, it’s very appropriate for the series. The sizzling and sensational OPs are what captures the heart of people and you can simply relish in the OP before every episode starts. Next, we look into the ED; ‘Departures’ Sung by Yu Na. Departures is a softer, calming that brings in instruments of a more delicate nature like the piano and the violin. The lyrics of the song are attuned with the conclusion of Guilty Crown despite being the first ED. At first glance, it seems like a very soothing piece, but all is revealed when the song is sung again at the conclusion of the anime, which puts everything in perspective. We won't spoil it for you if you haven't watched it. But for those that did, you know what we meant. Lastly, we look into the OSTs. Bios and ‘Euterpe’ sung by Mika Kobayashi and Egoist respectively. Bios being very fitting with the battle sequences which is sung entirely in German as a unique style of Mika's. Heavy instruments are used to harmonize with the powerful vocals of Mika that generally evokes a sense of power and the fighting spirit. ‘Euterpe’ is a sorrowful song that is sung at the very beginning which has desolation overlaying an aura of mystery. The OSTs encompasses both heavy and light genres. Both OPs and EDs shows that the series highlights the sequence of events very well. Bring an upbeat start to every episode with dynamic pop music and end it off with a soothing song after all that intense action. With the OSTs being a complement and an expression in situations of high intensity and introspection of the characters, Guilty Crown utilises music to portray the feelings of characters in a notable manner.

The Music is what Draws us into the Anime Scenes

nodame cantabile megumi wallpaper

Based on all of the above, have you ever experienced this before - as you play your favourite song and you reach the chorus or a certain point in the song, you experience a shiver up your spine and then feeling a momentary surge of ranging emotions? That is what a well composed melody can do for you. Try to watch an action or a romantic scene without background music, boring, right?. As we associate events in the anime with the music that is playing, we experience a burst of transient emotions that make us connect our own senses with the scenes we’re watching. Music stimulates us in a way no words could ever do. After all, music is the universal language and it allows us to connect to it without the need for prior exposure first. Innately, we all understand music, and while it may be hard to express it out, we see it as the raw emotions of the soul making it all the more easier to allow it to become synonymous with our own personal feelings. And that is why music adds a whole new depth of experience to your anime. Music is not simply about setting the mood in anime, it IS the mood of anime. There are many good animes with good music out there as well, we will like to give special honourable mentions to Nodame Cantabile, Hibike Euphonium, Psycho Pass and Noragami as well. Do you have any OSTs, OPs & EDs that you love? Has it affected you in any way at all? Share with us in the comments below and we will see you next time!

Intro

There is a Vietnamese proverb that says “brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet”. While every person’s take on the quote may differ, it is quite evident that though brothers and sisters may differ from each other, they both share a bond that cannot be broken. Often times, we see this close bond in anime between two siblings, usually the main character and their imouto. What does “imouto” mean, though? Imouto is the Japanese word meaning “little sister”. While the terms for older siblings can vary, little sisters are usually referred to as “imouto”. Depending on the closeness of the relationship, siblings can attach an honorific to “imouto” such as “-san” or “-chan,” although usually, “-chan” is the honorific used. When it comes down to sibling relationships, imouto is great for showing the close bonds between an older sibling and their little sister. Why? An imouto, no matter how strong they may appear, will usually bring out the protective side of the main character. They may appear to have everything in control, but they’ll always need their older sibling, so you can feel the closeness of the sibling bond between the two. Regardless if your imouto is a tsundere, kuudere, deredere or dandere, you can’t help but want to protect them! Also, as the young sibling with a cute demeanor, imouto can be used to invoke sympathy in many viewers. How often have you seen an imouto get hurt, bullied, or killed? There are various types of imouto shown in anime, much like in real life, not every single character type is the same. Some take care of everything in the household from cooking to cleaning, are completely helpless, relying heavily on those around them. Some imouto can bully the main character relentlessly and there are imouto characters who are protective of their older sibling. You’ll even get the imouto with the brother complex (brocon) and likewise, the onii-san (big brother) may even have a sister complex (siscon). Any anime imouto come to mind yet? Well, let us take a look at a few anime imouto that should not be missed.

Kousaka Kyousuke hasn’t gotten along with Kirino, his imouto, in many years. Kirino seems to look at him with resentment most of the time. Kyousuke can’t remember a time when it was different and he believes that’s just how it’ll always be. Then one day, he stumbles upon a DVD case, in his home, for a magical girl anime Hoshikuzu Witch Meruru with a copy of a little sister eroge hidden inside. To find the owner, he mentions the subject about magical girl anime at dinner with his family only to receive negative remarks from his parents who are prejudice against otaku. Later that night, Kirino reveals to Kyousuke her collection of lolicon games and moe anime. Now begins Kyousuke’s adventures into the otaku world with his imouto, Kirino. Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai is an anime all about the imouto! Well, Kyousuke’s imouto, anyway. Kirino is Kyousuke’s imouto with an obsession with imouto, herself. Kirino’s love of imouto stems from their cuteness and loving personalities, although Kirino clearly lacks one of those traits. In this anime, we get to witness two characters with imouto complexes: Kirino and Kyousuke. While Kirino’s obsession is focused more on imouto characters, Kyousuke’s complex stems from his love for his imouto, which develops as the story goes along. Sure, they don’t seem to get along. Ever. However, Kyousuke goes through a lot to make sure that his imouto is happy. OreImo shows us the two opposite sides of an imouto complex. Which side do you think you’re on?

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2015 – September 2015 "]

Otosaka Yuu has charm and intelligence, yet what people don’t seem to know about him is that he is capable of slipping into someone’s mind and controlling their body for a short period. Using this skill, Yuu was able to get the top grades in the school and enter a prestigious high school. However, Yuu is caught my Tomori Nao who forces him to transfer to Hoshinoumi Academy, which is a school dedicated to students with unusual powers. Yuu is then forced to join the student council to help put a stop to youths who abuse their powers. Be fair warned, Charlotte is an original anime created by Key, the same company that created Angel Beats! and brought visual novels such as Clannad, Kanon, and Little Busters! to your game console. In Charlotte, we get to witness the affects siblings have on one another. While Yuu is the central character, we see that his imouto, Ayumi is quite essential to the entirety of the anime. There’s a lot more to her character than the sweet omurice that she is always preparing for Yuu. Ayumi is the light that shines through the darkness in Yuu’s life. While Yuu clearly does not have that siscon that is so common in anime, it is evident to viewers that Ayumi is an important part of Yuu’s life. Charlotte does an amazing job of manipulating the viewer’s emotions using this invincible bond, doing what Key does best: pull at the heartstrings of every viewer. Ayumi may be one character, but her job as the imouto is the catalyst for much of Charlotte’s conflict.

Umaru is known for her beauty, grace, intelligence, and overall demeanor. She is the epitome of perfection with many admirers. However, her older brother Taihei knows better. When Umaru goes home, she becomes a lazy chibi who only knows how to play games, watch anime, eat junk food, and drink cola leaving the chores to Taihei. No one knows Umaru’s true self except Taihei who is battling a mental war between getting Umaru to behave like a proper lady or let her be the adorable imouto that she is! Himouto! Umaru-chan is an anime in which the imouto is the main focus throughout the entirety of the anime. In this anime, Umaru is the imouto who is capable of doing everything but chooses to do nothing. She is that imouto who is too lazy to care so Taihei, the onii-chan, is forced to take care of her every need. While Taihei attempts to make Umaru into a proper lady or expose her to the world, ultimately, Taihei’s entire life revolves around taking care of his imouto. Taihei is one of those sister complex characters who cannot help but dote on his imouto! Of course, Himouto! Umaru-chan does not pervert this sister complex in anyway. We merely get to witness how siblings interact with each other, much like we would in our day-to-day life. Umaru is mischievous, lazy, and cunning, but in the end, we can tell that Umaru also has a soft spot for Taihei, no matter how bratty she can be. Who knows someone with a sibling like that? Himouto! Umaru-chan is just a slice of life anime that revolves around an imouto. You will find that it may be more enjoyable than you first thought.

Imouto characters are all different in their own way, but in essence, they are all very similar. On the surface, the viewer may be led to believe that the imouto may be a troublesome character or another odd addition into a harem, but there is so much more to them than that. Imouto are more important to the characters than meets the eye, just like in real life. These imouto show us just how important our siblings are to us. Whether she is from a harem, slice of life, or parody anime, do you have an anime imouto that has struck a chord with you? What do you think about imouto in anime? Intro

Honey's Anime always enjoy bringing you the sweet goodness when it comes to definitions, and we would love to discuss the meaning of moe. Many of you are probably familiar with this term, but for those who are just jumping into the world of anime this one is for you. Akihabara, the hub for all things otaku, features a lot of the moe culture. You'll find an array of figurines, posters, and more displaying young cartoonish girls. More so, you may even come across a handful of women dressed up as maids to accommodate you into their cafe. So you're still wondering, what is moe? The term moe stems from the Japanese word moeru which can mean “to burn/get fired up” or “to burst/bud”. This all depends on the way it is written in kanji, but in otaku terms it refers to one's strong emotional attachment for a certain character, preferably a younger female. Cute girls represent purity and innocence, which is very alluring to many people and so moe becomes the term used to emphasize that. It is by no means spreading any negative connotation, but rather embracing our youth and happy-go-lucky state of mind. Furthermore, moe isn't something romantic (unless you want it to be) but rather, a strong overwhelming feeling of wanting to just hug and cradle these characters. To borrow the moeru term fired up, many otaku get excited over seeing young fictional girls having a good time. So we're going get you all bursting with excitement as we will now provide some great examples of moe themed anime.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Embracing our youth

As aforementioned, moe is a term used to emphasize one's love for the younger fictional female characters. Moe is a symbol of youth and adventure, and so many anime feature these types of girls who personify the word. Both male and female embrace the moe culture because of the freedom and prosperity it provides. We all wish to feel young again, where there are no rules attached to our behaviors, and we can enjoy the random conversations that come with being young. The feeling becomes nostalgic, as you watch a group of youthful cute girls enjoying the slice of life, and it reminds you of how beautiful life was when nothing mattered. While some may not agree to the overwhelming passion that others have for moe culture, it's a story that we all can read in our imaginations, sift through the pages, and accept that we too at one point were also searching for truth and had a thirst for adventure. Himouto! Umaru-chan is a wonderful example of moe so let us hop right in.

Himouto! Umaru-chan

Himouto! Umaru-chan dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 9, 2015 – September 24, 2015 "]

Himouto! Umaru-chan is a story about Umaru, who is just your ordinary high school girl. She is well mannered, achieves good grades, and is adored by many male and female classmates. However, what many of her mates don't know is her superman-like persona. Behind closed doors she transforms into a lazy, chibi sized, and overly messy otaku causing all kinds of havoc. This slice of life comedy follows Umaru and her unfortunate brother Taihei, as the two live together under one roof, creating all sorts of mischief. Umaru becomes a carefree individual who spends her time watching anime, drinking cola, and causing Taihei much pain as he has to clean up after her. It's a very funny example of embracing our youth and not caring for authority, as we see between Umaru and Taihei. As she waddles about lazily around her apartment looking for something to catch her attention, Taihei is always there trying to tame her, but to no avail. Umaru's close friends are no different than her, as they all share the quirkiness of a youthful mind, spreading laughter around themselves. Moe is very much a selling point of the show, as we see a young adorable girl who really loves nothing more than living her life the way she chooses, and lets no one tell her what she can or can't do. If you truly love moe then Himouto! Umaru-chan is a highly recommended anime to watch.

Clannad

Clannad dvd
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" October 5, 2007 -March 28, 2008 "]

When Tomoya, a bright young teenager, walked to school he passes a young girl mumbling words to herself. Something she says catches his attention, and so he approaches her with curiosity. He discovers that her name is Nagisa, and that she is suffering from an illness. Over time the two become friends through constant communication and Tomoya is then told that, due to her illness she's set out to achieve her goal to revive the school drama club. What gets more interesting over time is that four other young cute girls come together, along with Tomoya and Nagisa to help overcome their own respective obstacles. We chose Clannad as part of our moe anime because, immediately you become emotionally attached to at least one of the five girls and you relate to them. One great example is Fuuko Ibuki, who is somewhat of a loner but enjoys spending her time carving really cute looking starfish to make others happy. Her character design is that of a young girl with dreams of becoming something, embracing her youth and just being ditzy. When you see her, your heart will flutter and burst with emotion because of how adorable she is and you just want to hug her to say everything will be alright. This is what moe refers to, as the characters make you feel a sense of awe and create an everlasting feeling of warmth.

Cute and Innocent

Moe is more than just about clinging to our youth, but also it is about admiring the innocent and cute nature of the characters we so love. When we are in the presence of these characters, our hearts lose all control and fall into a state of quasi love. It is a remarkable feeling, since we don't even realize that we have become hypnotized by the innocent, shy, and quirkiness of our beloved. This is why moe has become such a popular genre for many, because a large number of us dream of being embraced and feel that “doki doki” overpowering our will. In our next example of moe anime, we will take a look at Lucky Star. This anime truly defines moe just as much as our other examples, but you'll immediately fall in love with Tsukasa and her sister once you see how they behave. [Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 8, 2007 – September 17, 2007 "]

The name itself sounds so fun loving and childlike, similar to that of main characters Tsuaka and her sister Kagami. While most of the spotlight is focused on Izumi, we have decided to choose Tsukasa for good reason. When you first get a glimpse of Tsukasa, your heart starts to melt at her extremely child like appearance. Her happy-go-lucky attitude shines all throughout, and her passion for cooking gives her a strong sense of maturity despite her looks. Tsukasa isn't perfect by any means, as she is quite clumsy and airheaded at times. It is for that reason we quickly fall for her, because we just want to hold her in our arms to tell her that mistakes are okay, and we love her for who she is. When she falls asleep (which is very often) her adorable face stands out, and at that moment your heart swells with jubilance. Kagami on the other hand is more mature than Tsukasa, and is the one who protects her. While her cold exterior may throw some viewers off, she is just as moe as Tsukasa because of her tsundere mindset. The large beaming eyes, paired with their rosy red cheeks just make you want to scream and reach out to worship them. We highly suggest tuning in to Lucky Star, as it will surely fill you up with joy.

One day, you decided to change the channel, watch something new, and found yourself immersed in the world of anime. Now you simply can't stop watching. Welcome to the otaku world! We know it’s confusing, but we are mostly friendly. And we have cookies! So like any subculture out there, anime has slang; special words used in certain ways within Japanese society and that have been changing through time. We otaku also contributed to the changes of words usage, as anime has crossed the borders of its original country and now is enjoyed all around the world. So this time, we are going to explain several suffixes that you surely have heard in your favorite anime series. Remember, an informed otaku is a good otaku.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The origins of -san, -sama, -chan and -kun

One characteristic of Japanese is that it's an agglutinative language. This means we have some letters forming a root word and then we can add some stems that act as branches to form a sentence. Adding other stems (like leaves) right after the original word modifies the meaning, making it more specific. The “branches” and “leaves” makes it easier to identify the meaning and intention of the words. This is basically what happens when we hear “name-chan” instead of a plain name. In Japan, name suffixes help us knowing how we stand towards a person within their hierarchical society. It would be rude to address a superior (a boss) in a familiar or even in a plain manner, for example. Suffixes might sound as medieval or even dictatorial, but they also can help us to show affection towards other people, as we will see soon.

What is -san?

Probably the most heard name suffix by new otaku is -san. After all, it has been used in famous American movies like Karate Kid. -san is derived from -sama, which we will explain a little bit later. Anyway, using -san after a name shows respect towards an equal of age, school grade or status. It's used to address people, but on these days, it can also be used for pets or objects.

Kotoura-san

Kotoura-san dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan 2013 - March 2013 "]

Also known as The Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura, this story was originally a manga by Enokizu. Haruka Kotoura is a sweet girl who can read people’s minds. This is a hazle for her, as she is rejected even by her own family. One day, she meets the pervert but kind Yoshihisa Manabe, who offers to become his friend. From that point on, Haruka makes the voyage back towards being accepted by society. As we can notice in the anime title, -san is translated as “Miss”, showing the respect Haruka wishes so much to earn.

What is -sama?

-sama is used for people who have a higher rank than the speaker, so we can find it in postal information, business mails, customer support, and similar situations. On daily conversation though, is a little bit more rare to hear. Kami-sama (meaning God) is also written with this suffix, but if you happen to find someone who call themselves “name-sama”, this shows arrogance. You have been warned.

Aa, Megami Sama!

dvd Megami-sama
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Jan 2005 - Jul 2005 "]

Also found under the English title of “Oh, My Goddess!”, this very long manga by Kousuke Fujishima tells us the story of Keiichi Morisato. A looser by nature, he mistakes the telephone number of his senpai (superior grade school fellow) and enters the world of Belldandy and her sisters, members of the Goddess Help Line. In this anime, we find a mortal falling in love with someone superior to him, so it is more than logical to address the sweet Belldandy with the suffix -sama.

What is -chan?

We know that Japanese have a special spot on their lives for everything cute. Under this logic, -chan is the cute version for -san which shows that besides respecting someone, we are fond of that someone. The suffix -chan tends to be used for young family members, from babies to teenagers, but it can also be used for grandparents. Still, these days -chan can be used for everything we find cute. Remember Kitty-chan? Yes, Hello Kitty is called Kitty-chan in Japan. We also have to be careful, as using -chan to call someone from a higher rank is considered rude. So please, make sure the person you want to address using -chan thinks of you as a close or dear friend. A person calling themselves “name-chan” is considered childish also, so if the motivation behind it is to have a cute effect, there is no further problem. Just notice that in work or formal environments it will sound out of place.

Crayon Shin-chan

Crayon Shin-chan
[Information episodes=" 888 " aired=" April 1992 - Ongoing "]

Who in the anime world has not heard about Shin-chan? But well, just in case you are a brand-new newbie: Yoshito Usui created a manga about a small and mischievous boy called Shinnosuke Nohara and his daily life adventures with his family. Some consider this anime as the Japanese Simpson family. As you can notice here, another characteristic of the suffix -chan is that the first name can be shortened, in this case from Shinnosuke to Shin. So, Shin-chan is the perfect way to call a little, although restless boy!

What is -kun?

This suffix is commonly used for men and children, but it also can be applied by persons in a high status when they refer to any person in a lower status, especially in formal environments like school or work. It is not uncommon to hear Professors calling their female students with the suffix -kun. It is also interesting that male freshmen in companies call their superior female colleagues with this suffix also. But maybe the most important usage for -kun in the world of anime is that it's a favorite suffix for girls to show affection towards a certain guy.

Tonari no Seki-kun

[Information episodes=" 21 " aired=" Jan 2014 - May 2014 "]

This anime started as a one shot manga by Takuma Morishige. The idea behind it is simple but funny; Toshinari Seki is a boy who makes all kind of experiments and games instead of paying attention in class. His classmate Rumi Yokoi is both distracted and annoyed by this, but always ends up joining his endeavors. As she is the main narrator, we hear her constantly referring to him as Seki-kun.

Conclusion

So, here we have the explanation for the most common suffixes in the anime world. The Japanese language can sound a little funny or even complicated at times, but it has also shown us that it has a cute side, right? Also there are other unusual suffixes in the Japanese language, but that's material for future articles. We hope you enjoyed this brief explanation full of Japanese culture. Now you can go and call your friends in a proper otaku and fun way (just ask them first if it’s ok!). We are also open to all your suggestions and comments. See you soon!

Intro

Here at Honey's Anime, it is our goal to ensure that everyone leaves with a better understanding of Japanese culture. Anime is most surely our forte, however we love to provide you all with more than just the fun and games. The definition we'll be looking at is one of the more recent terms used in Japan, and is surely to last for quite some time. Japan is all about trying new things, and Agokui is one of the ways of expressing love and romance. Prior to the surge of agokui, the term “Kabe-Don” (putting ones hand firmly on the wall in front of the one with whom you have an emotional attachment to) was very popular, and many found the action to be a very flirtatious way of communicating how you felt. Now agokui has taken over with a more soft and sophisticated approach. The term agokui comes from “Ago” which means chin, while “Kui” refers to a soft “creak” sound as if one were to open a window when extending the arm (an onomatopoeia). The action is simply to place one's hand under the chin of your significant other, bringing them in closely for that magnificent kiss. Not all agokui conclude with a kiss as the action itself is what emphasizes the moment in which two people embrace one another. You most likely have seen this specific action in a variety of romance films/anime, but perhaps you were unaware of its meaning. Now that we have provided you with the definition, it is now time to move into the meat and bones of it all. Let's hop right to it.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Showing affection

Agokui is a form of showing one's true affection for the person you are strongly attracted to, and so its popularity stems from that. Everyone all over the world understands the purpose of love, and its powerful euphoric feeling that captures your heart. When your closest partner shows their true emotions, your body trembles with the sensation of joy. The tenderness of agokui is why so many are enamored by it, simply because it demonstrates one's ability to take charge and remind that person just how irresistible they are in the heat of the moment. We have seen the chin holding technique even in the western world, in blockbuster romance films so it surely is nothing new to many. However, in Japan it has taken off in such a big way since most people aren't subjected to it as predominantly compared to that of the western hemisphere. That isn't to say that affection is lacking in Japan because by no means it isn't. What this is trying to say is that Japan is exploring new territory which involves various new romantic ideas to liven up the relationship. Here are two great anime which demonstrate how powerful love is, and when agokui is performed perfectly.

Futaba was well known in her middle school as being extremely attractive, and obsessed over by the boys. The girls however felt an extreme jealousy and ostracized her a number of times. Despite the negativity she encountered, it never stopped her from moving forward and focusing on the one person that mattered most: Her classmate Kou Tanaka. Her feelings grew for Kou when the two had shared a shelter from the rain, followed by other memorable events that took place in their lives. There was a time when two had planned to meet up at a summer festival, but Kou unfortunately never showed up causing Futaba to feel lonely. Fast forward several years to high school where now Futaba has grown more mature in her ways, but this time behaves differently compared to her past experiences. Her tomboyish behavior garners her attention so much that a very attractive boy notices her. That very same boy is none other than Kou, who also has changed, not only his family name, but his appearance. A great example of agokui in a scene where the two are standing in the living room, and another young boy walks in to see Kou caressing Futaba's blushing face in the famed agokui position. This scene accurately represents the overwhelming power of agokui, since it truly melts a woman's heart and shows how much the man cares for her. No words are said, just an action that speaks volumes in a strong romantic fashion. We highly recommend watching this great romantic comedy to get your slice of the agokui aciton.

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 7, 2012 -December 30, 2012 "]

This drama filled anime will surely have your heart strings being pulled at every moment, as Sukitte Ii na yo is about saying I love you in the most profound way. Mei was your ordinary school girl who enjoyed the finer aspects of life, until a traumatic incident involving her friends reshaped her life forever. Due to this experience, she became somewhat reclusive and made sure to avoid as many people as she could to avoid being hurt. Throughout high school she was able to strongly maintain her iron clad exterior until one day at school, she comes across an attractive young boy named Yamato Kurosawa. Suddenly, the more introverted and protective girl now questions her behaviors as to whether they were the right choices. Yamato shows great attention to her which Mei can't seem to reject, simply because he doesn't ignore her like everyone else is. Being the confident man that he is, Yamato unabashedly slips her his phone number, completely changing the scale of the relationship in an instant. Over the course of the series, we see the relationship of these two grow fonder, as Yamato unexpectedly gives Mei a kiss using agokui, completely making her heart swell with passion. This strong form of affection is what truly made the agokui scenes in this highly romantic anime stand out. Unlike most anime that cut to the next scene just before the anticipated kiss, sukitte ii na yo shows us every little detail of what a kiss looks like. The premise of the show is to demonstrate how powerful love can be when two people can embrace their imperfections, look past the pride and prejudice, and develop a bond so strong that saying I love you can be done through action rather than words. Agokui is not a skill one learns but rather is a natural gift we all have to show our true affection for the one we admire. This anime will surely make you wish for a fantastic romantic adventure of your own, so check it out.

Actions speak louder than words

Showing our love isn't always done through words, since words can often come across the wrong way leading to some pretty uncomfortable scenarios (we've all been there). That is when displaying one's endearment towards the other with action becomes more profoundly satisfying. Everyone loves to be charmed and stimulated and in doing so, demonstrate their true feelings with confidence. In the next example that we will provide, it shows us how much determination one must proceed with in order to get results. Love doesn't just drop into your lap like we all have imagined, it is sought after through hard work and diligence. When confronted with the one we care about, our emotions fluctuate like that of stocks on the ticker. These emotions are what should drive us to make that calculated decision to show just how much we love the person. Without much action behind our words, the feeling becomes jaded and we end up with a lackluster ending. Let's take a look at Kaichou wa Maid Sama! and see how agokui is done.

Misaki has had her fair shares of ups and downs throughout school. Many of the boys around her have nicknamed her “demon president” due to her strict orderly fashion, and her ability to use her mastery of Akido techniques to defend the girls around school. Behind this striking demeanor lies a secret that many of her classmates are unaware of; it's that she works as a part time maid at a maid cafe. Misaki uses the job to help cover the bills due to her current family situation, and so she feels embarrassed to let anyone know of her private life in fear of being ridiculed. However, all secrets must be exposed as one day Takumi, the most popular boy in school, walks into the maid cafe. Knowing of her secret, Takumi uses strategic thinking to coax Misaki into doing what he wants. Eventually, the coaxing slowly turns into an infatuation as the two become closer romantically over time. There is one fantastic example of agokui in Kaichou wa Maid Sama! when Takumi catches Misaki alone at night after work. The two are clearly enamored by one another, and so Takumi proceeds to grab her chin like a true champion and goes to lay the final blow. This example not only proves the act of agokui, but also demonstrates to everyone how important self confidence is when dealing with relationships. Actions surely will overpower that of words, as long as you are confident enough to gently caress your loved one’s chin and bring them closer to say...I love you.

Closing Paragraph

As long as love continues to exist in this wonderful world, you will most likely see the romantic style of agokui manifest into something huge. Romanticism was very popular in the early 16th century and you can still see large remnants of it all throughout the world. Chivalry is a fantastic example of displaying ones love, and perhaps if paired well with agokui you may find yourself a partner in no time. While we don't promote that you go outside and perform agokui on every attractive woman you see, we do advise that you give it a shot when you do find that special someone. If you feel like there are more examples out there that didn't make the list, be sure to show your love and leave them in the comments section down below! Article Intro

So Valentine’s Day and White Day have passed in Japan and you’re alone. You spent the days eating chocolate you bought yourself or maybe you plan on celebrating Single’s Day like the people in South Korea. You have to celebrate something, right? You deserve to celebrate something, too! But wait! What if you are actually in a relationship and you didn’t realize it? If you are an otaku or an avid anime enthusiast, as many of you must be if you’re on this site, you will be surprised to find out that you may actually be in a relationship and not even know. What do I mean? Have you ever thought that your relationship with anime is just like dating someone? It may seem like a strange idea on the surface, but maybe there’s more truth to it than you initially thought. How is dating different than watching anime? Well, it may not actually be as different as you think. Sure, you may not be in a relationship with a physical human, but perhaps it is not as ridiculous as it sounds. Let’s talk about 5 reasons why watching anime is like dating, shall we?

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Every Relationship Takes Time

One of the most important things to remember in a relationship, especially when you’re starting off, is that it needs time. Once you start dating, you end up spending all of your time together to get to know one another. Time is necessary to grow and get closer, but sometimes, you’ll find that maybe you spend more time as a couple than you do as an individual. When you watch anime, don’t you opt to spend quality time watching anime, getting to know the characters, and falling in love with the story? Don’t you take the time to find out if the anime is worth continuing or dumping? You want to know if the anime is worth it. When the season’s done, you still spend time reading the light novels, playing the games, watching the specials, re-watching the series, reading the manga, etc. When the season ends, your relationship with the anime doesn’t! Just how much time do you actually devote to your anime? Do you spend more time watching anime than you thought you did?

2. Sacrifices Must be Made

You can’t forget that when you start dating, sacrifices have to be made. Sometimes you will have to forsake time with your friends and family to spend time with your significant other. You will have to sacrifice something you like, foods you enjoy, other hobbies, etc. to please your other half. No, it is not something so restricting, but relationships may require some sort of sacrifice so that you can get along. This can be applied to anime as well! Have you ever sacrificed time with your friends to watch anime? Maybe you sacrifice a day of work to play an anime video game—not that you should shirk your responsibilities, but some people do make that choice. How many people watch anime in Japanese? Well, don’t you sacrifice the ease of watching anime in English so that you can watch your favorite anime in Japanese? Or likewise, if you opt for English dubbed anime, don’t you lose some of the meaning and Japanese culture when you watch? Sometimes, sacrifices do need to be made so that you can make it work between you and your favorite anime.

3. Relationships are an Investment

Whether you are male or female, don’t you find yourself spending more money when you are in a relationship? You have meals to eat, movies to see, amusement parks to go to, and gas to pay for. Don’t even forget the gifts for birthdays, holidays, and no reason at all. Relationships are an investment! When you have an anime you love, don’t you find yourself buying the DVDs? Even if you can watch the anime as it is airing, wouldn’t you prefer to just buy the Blu-ray Discs to see the uncensored scenes? Fans also buy anime merchandise like figures, dolls, games, posters, and clothes. When something new comes out, you buy it. If you happen to be lucky enough to be near an Animax Café, you might be compelled to drop in every time they have a new theme. If you love cosplay, don’t you invest your time and funds into finding the best materials to craft your costume, or buy a costume online? You cannot forget about anime conventions! Anime conventions require a lot of time, planning, money, and energy. Upon closer inspection, perhaps anime fans invest more in their anime obsession than people do in their relationships. From merchandise to events, it is clear that we do invest a lot for our love of anime. Isn’t it similar to when you are dating? How much do you invest into your anime relationship? How does that compare to when you are dating someone?

4. Don’t Forget to Show Off

After all that you have invested in your relationships, sometimes you just want to show off that you’re in a relationship, right? Do your aunts ask about your relationship status? Show them your partner! You can show off your relationship at places like Disneyland while wearing matching Mickey Mouse ears. Do you remember hating couples when you were single? Well, when you’re in a relationship, you can be that couple everyone hates! When you are in a relationship with anime, you will show off in your own way. Sure, you can be that person who takes your waifu or husbando on a date. There are even apps and games that make it easy for you to take your virtual partner on a date in the real world, but that may not be for everyone. Many otaku show off their anime love by accessorizing their handbags with anime pins, stickers, and decals. There is such a wide array of items available online and in stores these days, especially when you’re lucky enough to live in a Japanese city like Tokyo, as it is extremely easy to find the anime accessory for you. Now, if you do not like accessories, there are other options. Others will opt to show off their anime love by wearing anime clothes or accessories. You can purchase them online, in stores, or make them yourself. It doesn’t even have to be an outrageous costume that will have you stick out amongst the crowd. How easy is it to dress like Sora while you’re walking around? Pretty easy. You will have an easy time blending in, but to the right people, it will send the right message: that you are an anime otaku. Sure you cannot walk hand in hand with your anime love, however with the right anime merchandise, you can still show it off and be proud of your anime relationship!

4. Sometimes You Care Too Much

Have you ever been in a relationship where you may be a bit too sensitive to how other people may perceive you and your partner? You can be quick to defend without even realizing the ramifications of your actions or the jest behind a person’s remark. Sometimes, your partner is not even offended, yet you will be the one to take on the offense in their stead. Yeah, that does happen, and you can bet it happens in the anime community as well. There are people who are quick to defend anime to people who aren’t fans, unable to fathom the idea that there are people in this world who don’t share the same views as you do. If you have a favorite genre or series, you may be extremely quick to defend the series or push it on someone who may not even have the same tastes as you. While yes, I realize that anime do not actually have feelings so they cannot care if you enjoy them or not. Fans are pretty quick to take offense if someone doesn’t like a particular anime, which is especially true for mainstream series. Sometimes, you care about anime too much because that’s just how you show your love. You love this series too much for someone to go around talking about how they dislike it. Isn’t it similar to when you’re dating and someone makes some sort of remark about your partner because they cannot undertand what you see in them? Do you still think that watching anime is nothing like dating?

Closing Paragraph

When you’re in a relationship, there are a few key factors that come with any relationships. Dating has quite a few traits that just seem to come with it, but do they really only apply to dating? Whether you’re just an anime fan or you have a waifu or husbando, watching anime can be similar to dating. Have you ever compared any of your hobbies to a relationship? What qualities do you think apply? Are you in an anime relationship?

Introduction

There is no doubt that anime is different, the original source material changed, when it is brought to the West from Japan. The Japanese voices are dubbed over with English voices. Names changed. Sentences altered. Even whole scenes and episodes are omitted. Some have to do with the way the characters speak, while other situations involve censorship. However, there is one factor that some people do not consider: Westernization. Westernization of anime involves changing something in a scene so that Western audiences can better relate or understand. For many fans who began watching English dubbed anime as children, they can recall at least one instance in which something had been altered in an anime for the sake of being relatable. One thing that has been ingrained into my childhood memories of anime was of a scene in Pokemon when the characters were clearly making onigiri out of rice, but the characters called it a jelly donut. While I had no idea what an onigiri was, I was fully aware what rice was, so I was at a loss for words when they called it a donut. How can an item made out of rice be a jelly donut? Do you really put jelly inside the rice? It baffled me. It was even more confusing in future episodes when they referred to the food item by another name. The West is a diverse place than people give it credit for. Many assume the West is full of Caucasian people who do not seem to have knowledge of other cultures, but is that the truth? Do young children, who may just be starting to watch English dubbed anime, lack knowledge on other cultures? This brings into question: Is Westernizing anime still necessary?

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

As Made By Japan

spirited away As Made in Japan
[sourceLink asin="" text="Spirited away Captcha" url="" ]

The most common reason for changing a scene in an anime is just to make an anime more relatable to a Western audience. Anime is a product of Japan, usually entailing the use of Japanese items, companies, and foods, which many companies believe that Western audiences will not understand. How can someone know what DIET is? Do we even have dango in the west? What are those Shinto shrines about? Anime clearly has a lot of Japanese culture in them that many Western anime fans may not notice at first glance. Characters always visit shrines on New Year’s Day. On Valentine’s Day, girls give boys chocolate. Anime characters love to do haunted houses and tell scary stories. What about on Christmas when characters go out on dates with their better half? Then, at the end of the day, anime characters love to sit back and soak in the bathtub, sento, or onsen. How easy are some of these qualities to miss? Even when it comes down to food, anime mainly feature foods that are common in Japan. A lot of life seems to revolve around meal times, so food is something that you just cannot miss in anime. We have seen foods such as dango, curry rice, omelet rice, ramen, bento, tamagoyaki, and melon pan. Are these dishes that we might find in the west? Would viewers be able to understand what the dishes are simply by seeing them? Guess not. Aside from the infamous jelly donut scene from Pokemon, there are many other instances in which Japanese foods seem to have been renamed or even edited altogether in the anime to feature more Western foods like sandwiches, because everyone in the West eats sandwiches, right? Well, maybe not now but kids did back in the 90s! Names are also changed in anime to more Western names that would be easier for Western viewers to pronounce and recognize. Let’s take a look at Sailor Moon. The name of the main cast were changed into more Western names. Usagi became Serena. Mamoru was now Darien. Ami became Amy. The list goes on, but this isn’t even particular to just the anime Sailor Moon. There are other anime where names are changed to suit the Western audiences better. Another very subtle example of cultural censorship is the anime Mach Go Go Go, better known in the West as Speed Racer. Speed Racer’s opening and closing numbers were altered, taking away any cultural references that were previously in the numbers, so that viewers had absolutely no idea that the anime was actually a Japanese product. When we want to look at blazing examples of Japanese culture, we can turn to Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. Not only is it based in a Japanese onsen, the patrons are all part of Japanese folklore and much of the anime has references to Japanese culture that many may not be able to comprehend. Does this make the anime itself confusing? Disney did a good job altering dialogue to make the anime easier to comprehend for many viewers, but whether or not children understood the anime’s cultural references or not, it is one of the top Miyazaki films in the States. The West is actually full of many diverse nations unlike some in the East. Japan may have a few foreigners who do live on its islands, but Western countries like the United States of America, Canada, the UK, and France, are undoubtedly melting pots of various cultures. Although large parts of the population are Caucasian, does that mean that Asian references are lost on them? Is cultural censorship truly necessary?

Cultural Sensitivity

IsWesternizingAnimeStillNecessaryFinal Cultural Sensitivity
[sourceLink asin="" text="Official Image" url="" ]

Each country has its own laws and code of ethics, so it may be no surprise to many individuals to see that scenes may be edited in an anime to conform to the sensitivities of the individuals in society that it will be released to. Yu-Gi-Oh! is another dear anime that many of us may remember fondly from our childhood, but did you ever notice all the changes in the anime? When it was being released in the west, many thought the anime referenced black magic too often to be comfortable to show to children as is. Changes were made. Yugi’s most notable card, Dark Magician, was actually named Black Magician in the Japanese version. Is that a big difference? Well, that’s up to you. Also, there were depictions of hexagrams shown in the anime that had to be altered to take out the dark summoning symbol, making them odd star shapes instead. We also cannot forget our favorite Westernized anime, Pokemon, which, despite being a children’s show, has received quite a bit of censoring and altering. One episode was outright banned when the anime was brought to the states due to the inexcusable action of constantly pointing a gun in the face of a child. Although Ash is on his own, he is still a child! This did bring about a discrepancy in the episode numbering and confused viewers when Ash suddenly had a herd of Taurus that was unexplained in the Western version of the anime. There’s also that mishap with poor Jynx, who was labeled as a racist character by people like Carole Boston Weatherford, for its skin color, oversized features, and drag-like dress that was reminiscent of Blackface minstrels. Jynx’s old coloring was changed and old scenes were altered to fit the new style. Now, Jynx’s appearances in the anime was limited altogether. Don’t want to insight another outcry of the character’s racism, right? Well, in a diverse America, where people are quite quick to label something as racist or culturally insensitive, it is understandable why there have been these type of changes in anime. A rather sensitive subject in the West, as opposed to the East, seems to be homosexuality. We all know yaoi is huge in the female anime domain and many series tend to feature yaoi jokes or insinuate a shounen ai relationship, but have you seen that in the West? Westernized anime tends to edit series to either take out the references, alter the scenes, or change the dialogue so that homosexuality is no longer featured in the series. Card Captor Sakura is just one example of this, where the special relationship between Sakura’s older brother Touya and Yukito are altered to remove hints of a romantic nature between them. However, we also cannot forget the perplexing relationship between Haruka and Michiru from Sailor Moon that confounded fans with its changes because, rather than insinuate a homosexual relationship between the characters, viewers were given a relationship that still seemed homosexual in nature but also incestuous. Aside from the homosexual relationship, there was also the infamous last season that was not released in the West due to the inclusion of a few genderbending characters: the Sailor Starlights. Yes, nothing says homophobic than watching the westernized Sailor Moon it seems. Speaking of sexuality, Western releases of ecchi anime tend to be filled with endless censors due to the idea that we shouldn’t release animated material with sexual content for younger viewers. God forbid that there be implied nudity on TV when there is so much more wholesome programming.

Rate that Anime

IsWesternizingAnimeStillNecessaryFinal Rate that Anime
[sourceLink asin="" text="Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Captcha" url="" ]

Let us not neglect the fact that the rating systems are different in the West than in Japan. Many anime that come from Japan have to be edited to fit a certain age range, making it suitable to air on television. The difference in rating systems was so different, at one point, in the U.S., all anime was mislabeled as being rated R-18 at Blockbusters, making it difficult for minors to watch anime. It is a very different feel when you watch an anime in its native Japanese and when you watch the Western release. An anime designed for children can even be altered in its Western release. If you have ever watched Digimon, did you ever try to rewatch it in its original Japanese? The anime surprisingly has a lot of adult aspects to it including gross amounts of alcohol consumption that were edited out or altered for its Western release. Never thought that would be in a kids anime, huh? A lot of shounen anime also has to be altered to be shown in the west. Blood and gore are deemed inappropriate for younger viewers so shounen anime like One Piece has to be edited to take out much of the blood. Disney is notorious for altering plotlines and material so that its films can be more family friendly with a happier ending than its original source. Studio Ghibli had given Disney permission to release an English version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. In that instance, Disney decided to cut frames, change dialogue as well as the plot so that the English version was simplified to an alarming degree, angering Studio Ghibli. What was once a beautiful work of art was now a nonsensical piece of amusement for the Western world. Studio Ghibli refused to allow any more English adaptations of their movies unless Disney agreed not to cut out any frames. Disney had requested to alter Princess Mononoke so that it could avoid a PG-13 rating, but Studio Ghibli refused. In the United Kingdom, all entertainment released to be viewed at home has to be passed through the British Board of Film Classification to receive an appropriate rating. Some anime that would otherwise have been suitable for younger viewers, had to have their ratings changed due to the amount of swearing featured in the animation. The anime La Blue Girl was even refused a rating and much of the content of this 4 episode anime had to be edited out for it to even be classified!

Final Thoughts

A lot can be said about the Western releases of anime from the terrible voice actors to all the censorship. From making a series appropriate for younger viewers to cutting out themes that are not acceptable in society, Westernization has a series of factors to why an anime has to be changed. Considering today’s diverse society and how desensitized our society is, what do you think about the Westernization of anime? Is it necessary? Does it have a purpose? What do you think would occur if we show anime in its purest form to Western viewers? Would it have a negative effect or, when something negative occurs, will it be evidence to pin a person’s insanity on? The West is a very different place than Japan, but who knows what could happen?

Have you ever seen a show with a character who wanted to rule the world? How about a show where a character demanded that another person bow before his/her presence? Did that person possibly scare you in some way as well as grab a little bit of your interest and respect? Don’t worry. That mix of emotions is perfectly normal when meeting someone who is chasing such a monstrous and massive dream. However, you should prepare yourself a little bit as you have just come across what is known as a kamidere.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

General Traits

A kamidere, in the simplest terms, is an anime archetype for characters with a god complex. The word derives from the roots ‘kami,’ which means god and then the common suffix of ‘dere,’ which means loving and is commonly seen attached to other anime archetypes like tsundere and yandere. Admittedly, the ‘loving’ aspect might be rather tough to find in such characters, but that shall be discussed in a little bit. To begin, the essential thought process for such characters cover a couple aspects. First, they tend to believe they are destined for greatness. When your dream is to conquer the world, it would be a bit strange if you actually didn’t feel this way. The second is that they are certain that the life they lead surpasses or is beyond the grasp of their fellow men. This facet of their personality generally acts as the catalyst for them turning into kamidere. The moment you start believing that you are above your fellow man is the moment you have developed a god-complex. As a result, it should not come as a surprise that many of these characters come off as confident, if not just arrogant.

Light Yagami from Death Note

[sourceLink asin="B015GKSXAC" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 37 " aired=" Oct. 2006 – Jun. 2007 "]

Death Note follows Light Yagami as he creates a “utopia” through the power of the Death Note. The Death Note is simply a journal owned by shinigami, gods of death, that has the power to kill the person whose name is written into it. There are quite a few rules that go along with how to properly use such a journal, however, the price of using the Death Note is that you can neither go to Heaven nor Hell. Well, after the shinigami Ryuk drops his Death Note on purpose into the human world, it falls into the hands of the idealistic and slightly bored Light. From there, Light begins to use the Death Note in order to create a world that he sees as just, but his version of justice is questionable to say the least and catches the attention of the world-renowned detective known as ‘L’. A pretty obvious give away that Light is a kamidere is the simple fact that he wants to create a utopia that he’s the god of. He goes so far as to say “I am the God placed here to save the weak and create a perfect world.” If that does not depict a god complex, then only god knows what does. Admittedly, Light is a genius, one that not only is able to successfully outplay L, but also create his utopia within the span of the show. To do this he uses everyone and everything at his disposal. In fact, even the people he’s been closest to are nothing more than tools. During his father’s last breaths, instead of being legitimately sad, he tries to use the moment to find out the actual identity of ‘L’ in order to kill him. Anyone who desires any sort of intimacy with him is used as means of a spokesperson or scapegoat. It is quite sad if you consider that his initial goal was to protect the weak and innocent. The ends don’t always justify the means, and that’s something Light should have remembered.

Evolving into a God

Generally, it can be expected for what started off as confidence to turn into arrogance as the narrative develops. The reason behind this is that kamideres often do have a few skills/attributes that are at an exceptional level. Their communities frequently observe and praise these characters at a young age for intellectual brilliance or physical promise. Many have already accomplished quite a few incredible feats in their life or have attained a certain status. It is their belief in their skills as well as the supportive environment that allows them to appreciate and love life for all the possibilities it brings. Thus, kamideres can often see the good or at least true talent in other people. However, their abilities also tend to immediately seclude them from their society as they are hoisted onto a pedestal. It’s from this point that they receive the opportunity to see all that is wrong with the world. Throw into the mix a supernatural ability to change the world (Lelouch’s Geass in Code Geass or Akashi’s Emperor Eye in Kuroko no Basket) when the character has reached such a stage and, well, there’s no stopping them now in trying to enforce a new world order. Did that escalate too quickly? The mixture of their reasoning and character traits generally lead to a very interesting plot as the characters are forced into an extremely dynamic environment. In general, a story that follows someone trying to conquer anything, especially something as grand as the world, will have lots of action and some political intrigue as well. That’s exactly why a revolution is a common setting for a kamidere.

In a futuristic world where mobile mecha known as Knightmares exist, Japan has been conquered by Britannia and declared as District 11. The Japanese people, unhappy with Britannia’s rule, have formed resistance groups. One such resistance group is under the lead of the tactician Zero, aka Lelouch vi Britannia, an ex-prince who wants to get revenge on his father for murdering his mother and exiling him and sister. It is with the power of Geass and his supreme intellect that he is willing and capable to take on the overwhelming force of a world superpower. “Before creation there must be destruction. If my soul stands in the way, then I'll toss it aside. Yes, I have no choice but to move forward.” Here’s a prime example of Lelouch exalting himself past normal human standards, albeit, in a slightly painful manner. Lelouch, like Light Yagami, has an enormous intellect and when given the power to create change, allows himself to dive headfirst as a leading revolutionary. He also has a slight tendency to use people in order to get what he wants. Unlike, Light though, Lelouch does feel guilt over using human life and is actually affected by his personal relationships while relying on them heavily. Though he is ego-centric and believes he is the only one capable of reigning in a new future, it is purely a future for the people. SPOILER: Thus, his willingness to sacrifice himself as the final act of the rebellion.

The Multiple Faces of a God

A nice thing about this archetype is that it can actually be used for various effects outside of drama/action. Admittedly, it is generally entertaining to watch a leading kamidere, such as Light Yagami from Death Note, go all-out in his/her desire to change the world. Nonetheless, if kamideres were always associated with such drama, then the archetype would be rather dull in respect to the other anime character structures, which tend to allow more room for differing subtleties. Thankfully, the spectrum of a kamidere has quite a bit of range. For example, there’s the more humorous type of kamidere like Black Star from Soul Eater, who’s greater than god attitude is consistently used for comedic relief. I mean when someone has the guts to declare the majestic statement: “Are you scared? I understand. The first time I saw my reflection in the mirror, even I was frightened by how BIG my reflection was.” It takes quite the ego to even utter such a statement, but Black Start has a plethora of lines that touch upon his lack of humility. There’s also Keima from Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows) who views himself as the “God of Conquest” for having beaten an unheard amount of dating sims. “I don't give a damn about the real world,” is one of his most famous quotes, which demonstrate just how far he has removed himself from the realm of mortals. Also, despite the fact that he doesn’t have any aspirations for world conquest, his confidence when it comes to winning over a girl is on display throughout the series. With such characters, it’s not too hard why some could see kamideres as the drama queens of the anime world. They are after all the characters who demand immediate attention the moment they are on-screen. They’re also the type who will blow a fuse whenever something goes slightly off the planned course. Whether that’s have the tides of battle turned by an unexpected opponent or simply someone, who they would refer to as a ‘peasant,’ touching them without permission depends on the character. The type of character will also determine whether or not the audience finds such an outburst rather attractive or simply childish. If you take a character like Jamil from Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, then chances are you will see his frustration as simply childish and self-delusional to the fullest extent.

Archer (Gilgamesh) from Fate/Zero

[sourceLink asin="B00GGSYIGM" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Acting as a prequel to Fate/Stay Night, Fate Zero depicts the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War and the reasons why it is considered one of the most horrific and gruesome wars within the series. Though the narrative follows several characters, the main figures are Kiritsugu Emiya, who is known as a “Mage Killer,” and the noble Sabre spirit he summoned, Arturia. Well, opposing Kiritsugu and Sabre as one of the most deadly antagonists is the Archer spirit of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh considers himself as the most powerful beings in the universe. He dons a complete golden armor set, becomes extremely irritated when Berseker touches him, and demands that Sabre become his wife. “Ephemeral and brilliant one, fall to my embrace. That is my decision” is apparently a reasonable proposal in his mind. Even though there are a few redeeming moments, such as when he pays his respect to Alexander the Great, overall, the guy is quite the tyrant. Nonetheless, he is the “King of Heroes” for a reason and has the power to back up almost everything he claims. He is, after all, the one heroic spirit who was capable of becoming corporeal again and existing within the human plane of existence.

Conclusion

To be as blunt as possible, a kamidere is someone who views themselves as superior to everyone else. Hopefully, the article and examples were able to provide you with a clearer and more in-depth understanding of all the different nuances such a character can take on, because they really are a fun archetype to watch. They’re the revolutionary figures who can easily make a lot of enemies on their way to top. Plus, confidence is always attractive, which is something these characters have an abundance of.

Intro

Relationships play such an integral part in the growth of humanity, and we all often dream of that one person who we can spend a lifetime with. Everyone is on a journey to seek out harmony, and discover a new euphoria within. Although the journey to seek out such a person is no easy task, it's a task that we all somehow manage to muster through and end up in the arms of the right individual for us. It's why we thought it would be nice to elaborate more on the very popular term “Husbando”, and why it plays such a huge importance on our lives. The more predominant “Waifu” is a term that is in direct correlation to that of a beautiful female anime character, while “Husbando” refers to a male character whom we deem fitting enough to have strong attraction to. Everyone who immediately sees the husbando is drawn into his irresistible aura, wishing that they could either be with him, or be like him. There are different variations of the husbando, such as the bishounen husbando whose non-threatening features melt our hearts with his tenderness. On the other hand we have the tsundere husbando, the one who is so cold and distant but deep down we all know his heart is pounding with love and we just want to tame him. Whatever type you prefer is entirely up to you, so it is our job here at Honey's Anime to embrace husbando and give you a few examples to spice up your life.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The brave yet endearing

There are always two sides to every coin, and the same philosophy can be applied to the husbando. As stated in our intro, the husbando can take on various roles but still maintain his irresistible demeanor that just have us all trembling at the knees. In this case, we will start off with the more delicate side of the husbando since the popularity of bishounen anime have always been on the rise, especially as of late. The brave affectionate husbando is the one who we wish to sweep us off our feet with their strong, yet sweet attitude to everything. Their gentle embrace along with their confident character can have us experiencing a new euphoria that can only be received through him. In our upcoming examples, we will explore what it means to be a strong yet sweet husbando and why we chose them as our candidates. We will start off with Kittan from the very popular Guren Lagann series, and from there we will move into everyone's favorite Levi from Attack on Titan. We decided to start off with these two gentleman because they both demonstrate the core foundation of a husbando, one who is courageous on the outside, but deep down their loving embrace captivates us all.

Gurren Lagann is one of the better classic anime that dropped around the mid-2000's, with a spectacular story that we can all enjoy, because of its wide array of characters all of whom possess colorful personalities. After discovering a mysterious artifact that turned out to be the ancient artifact of war, Simon and Kamina fend off a whorde of enemies who are out to recapture the Lagann. Shortly after the battle, Simon and Kamina set off on a new journey to explore more of the wastelands in search for more. They soon find themselves against the beastmen, who are humanoid creatures that are out to destroy the gunmen, who are the last surviving remanants of humanity. It is now up to Simon and the rest of the team he has formed to reclaim the surface, while uncovering the mystery behind the ancient artifact of war. So while the show focuses on Simon and his two other comrades, Kittan plays an extremely major role in the show and really shows us what a real husbando is. Kittan is the leader of the black siblings, a group of survivors who work alongside Simon to bring an end to the terror of the beastmen. After acquiring his own ganman named “King Kittan”, he became a force to be reckoned with and became a great assistance to the Gurren Brigade. So what makes him a great husbando? Not only does he show us a side of bravery and a willingness to protect everyone around him, his more obnoxious behavior and carefree view on life is what we all strive to be like. One great example is when Simon finds himself trapped in battle with the beastmen, Kittan jumps in to save him and shortly after the two laugh it all off in a very humbling way as if he were saying everything will be alright so long as I'm around. That fearless attitude is what makes us all feel a sense of safety when in the arms of Kittan.

Attack on Titan came into the anime spotlight back in 2013 with amazing praise from many fans. It's story takes place in a world where mankind were slaughtered to the brink of extinction by gigantic humanoid monsters known as Titans. Their lust for human flesh sparked a lot of terror forcing those who survived to create large walls of concrete to keep them at bay. However, that peace came to an abrupt end when a colossal titan approaches the town, breaking through what was once thought of as an impenetrable wall, creating havoc within minutes. It is now up to the team of elite team Survey Corps to put a stop to all of the chaos that is ensuing, and restore peace to the town before all the titans destroy the wall and also humanity as we know it. Levi is the captain of the scouting legion division and leader of the special operations squad, which is an elite team of hand picked individuals brought together to protect Eren. The reason why we chose Levi as one of our husbando's is because of his handsome features, strong leadership qualities, and demonstrates loyalty to everyone who is around him. Levi is also somewhat of a perfectionist, in that he ensures that everything around him is spic and span, and readily available. A great example of his bravery is when one of his comrades fails to fend off one of the titans and finds themselves on the verge of death. Levi being the great husbando, flies in courageously fending off the titan and saving his comrade from near death, doing so in an almost effortless fashion. Everyone falls in love with this type of husbando because we all desire to have one who can take care of things, keep our place clean, and take charge when necessary to protect us. Our hearts melt with joy as we are greeted with an individual who not only takes good care of himself, but his charm and confidence will have you absorbed immediately.

The one we desire to change

There is that one husbando who you just want to fix because they have so many great qualities about them, but they misuse them on so many occasions. We have all come across that one individual who just can't seem to get it right, but when they do we immediately feel like we've contributed to their success. Evil or good natured, every husbando we desire to fix will more than likely have some side to them that somehow doesn't bring all the pieces together. We have decided to choose Light Yagami from Death Note as the one who we try so hard to change, because we know behind that cold exterior is a charming and warm individual who really only wanted to do the best for others. However they somehow slipped along the way and we need to be there to help pick them back up. So let us hop in and cover more about our handsome devil, Light.

The story of Light begins in an odd way, since he wasn't really aware of the events that would follow in his very pathless life. He was a very distant student in school who really had a strong disdain for those who brought harm to the world. He felt in his heart that there should be justice for those who brought pain and suffering, and that he would be deemed a God if he could simply rid of all of the evil around him. That is when shinagami Ryuk shows up one night, accidently dropping his death note while wandering around the human realm. Light eventually stumbles upon the note book on his way home from school, and from here his life changes forever. Curious about how the death note works, he witnesses a very disturbing event take place on TV, and so he writes the name of the suspect down in his book unknowingly aware of the events that would transpire. Soon after the suspect dies in the same way he had wrote it, his thirst for justice grew stronger and his twisted ways became more apparent over the course of the series. With the divine strength in his grasps, Light uses this note to dispose of anyone who gets in his way creating serious consequences for our handsome husbando. Light is by no means an evil person, as we can see that his intent to seek justice is not wrong. However, his approach to it all is what created a span of countless investigations around him, deeming Light to be a criminal himself. He demonstrates very positive qualities about him that we love, such as his calculated mind state and ability to foresee things. This shows a man who is very organized in his ways, and plans out his actions with every ounce of detail being written down. This great quality is what makes us fall in love, but we just want to change that careless and impulsive side to him since it's what puts him in trouble in the first place. Nobody is perfect, but this is exactly why everyone tries so hard to bring peace into his confused heart.

There are a large number of anime characters who we would deem husbando potential, some of which display similar qualities like those on our list. Much like the waifu, there is never a shortage to choose from and for us to truly embrace as our own. The husbando is one we all can rely on in times of struggle, since they demonstrate the innate ability to protect us from the dangers the world bring us. Similarly to the waifu who is there to nurture and bring about peace, the husbando's job is to ensure that we always feel needed no matter what. The winter 2016 anime season had its fair share of kuuderes and danderes. Almost every show had one! And one thing that is usually true about these types of characters is that they have a very cool and unique fashion sense! I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but hairstyles, colors and even clothes go through trends in anime just as much as they do in real life and during some seasons some of the characters even look so much alike you’d swear they’re the same person! Today we’ll take a good look at what our favorite kuuderes and danderes were wearing this season and see what is in and what is out! If you’re looking for a change of style, these girls (and guys!) might give you a few ideas. So let’s get started!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Short, Colorful and Wild Hairstyles

Last year we saw a lot of long white or light violet hair, not only in kuuderes and danderes, but in general. This season still has a few of those, but its looking a bit more varied and leaning towards more blues, aquas and greens. And pink, but there’s always pink, this is anime we’re talking about! Long flowing hair - most commonly blonde or black - is usually a symbol of beauty and femininity in anime. Danderes and kuuderes are usually not ones to care about fitting into a mold and so their hair tends to be short, messy and/or asymmetrical and comes in varied colors! This season we saw a lot of short hairstyles; some brightly colored bobs, like Nanami Shiranui from Norn9 and Lelei from GATE; and even shorter shaggy styles like Mana Asuha from Luck & Logic and Koito Minase’s red shag from Musaigen Phantom World. And of course, there’s also Saki Inui’s very anime-ish asymmetrical pale aqua hairstyle in Aokana which matches her outfits perfectly. A little more than half our kuuderes and danderes had short hair this season, making it the go-to look. And the vast majority of them had unnatural hair colors. In fact, all of the long haired girls had either a cool color or an interesting hairstyle making all of them stand out in some way. Clarion from Koukaku no Pandora and Shizuru from BBK/BRNK both accentuated their innocent looks with different shades of pink, while Sylvia from Schwarzesmarken keeps her wavy violet mane wild and messy.

And while kuudere/dandere boys are rare, we had a couple this season, and though one is blond and the other’s brunet, one thing they have in common is, they both have long hair! Aoto from Divine Gate keeps his chin length; and super kuudere Tomoe Yagami from Prince of Stride has his layered, asymmetrical and in his face. Such the cool guy!

Leave Something to the Imagination

The vast majority of the danderes and kuuderes this season (though I think that’s usually the case), were pretty modest with their outfits. Granted, Sylvia shows her cleavage when in uniform in Schwarzesmarken and some girls give a peek of thigh, but you don’t really see anything else! Lelei in GATE and Merry in Hai to Gensou no Grimgar also wear the clothes required by their profession and so they are limited as to how much skin they can show. The modesty of kuuderes and danderes can also be appreciated in their choice of legwear when in school uniform. This season we saw many of these girls decked out in thigh-highs or full-on tights. Nanami from Norn9 and Mana (Luck & Logic) are completely covered up, while Saki Inui (Aokana) opts for thigh-highs and short sleeves. The boys didn’t fall behind; Tomoe from Prince of Stride was entirely covered up from neck to toe almost the entire time! Well, I guess he did show his forearms a few times…

Boots & Booties!

Let’s be honest, few things say “cool chick” like a pair of knee-high or combat boots! And this season, most of the kuuderes and danderes were wearing just that. There were some pretty cool cyber boots you’d probably see at an electronic music show like Mana’s, especially when she’s Tranced with Artemis. Her boots have neon accents and buckles and are just all-around badass. Aika Suzuki’s boots in PSO2 are actually more than knee-high and they almost have a mecha-ish feel to them.

Captcha Musaigen no Phantom World Koitos-boots
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Wesite" url="http://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/books/phantom/special/" ]

As for the more subdued looks, we have some styles we could wear on the daily! Koito wears brown fold-over knee-high boots with brass accents. Nanami Shiranui also sticks to brown but wears the laced-up style that came with the uniform all the girls wear on the ship. Sylvia of course, wears her military issue black combat boots (no laces). But not everyone’s in knee-highs, Inui rocks short black combat boots with neon green accents to match her outfit and Merry wears navy blue booties to match her outfit and hair!

Colors of the Season: Black, Green & White

Except for Lelei, all the kuuderes and danderes this season wore black in some way. Inui and Mana both wear all black except for a few accents in lime green and aqua respectively. All others have black tights, skirts or a dress in Shizuru’s case. Saki Inui’s flying outfit is green and black with black wing-like sleeves (talk about a cool-dere!). Lelei la Lelena’s outfit is mostly white and green with some blue accents and Aika Suzuki’s outfit while in PSO2 is teal colored with a bit of black and white mixed in. Koito wears the same white, teal and black pattern on her uniform as well! No doubt these were the colors of the season! Though there was quite a bit of blue as well. Merry’s outfit is mostly white, one of the seasonal colors, but her cincher and accents are mostly navy blue like her hair. And Clarion’s Lolita dress is mostly dark blue with a bit of black and white here and there. Even our dandere Aoto and kuudere Tomoe got into it! Aoto rocks a blue jacket, white tee and black pants and Tomoe is seen in black most of the time.

Accessories: Headphones, Berets & More

One thing that stood out to me this season, and even inspired me to write this article is that two of the characters I think have the coolest style wear headphones! And they happen to be a dandere and a kuudere as well. These two of course are Mana Asuha and Koito Minase. Both of them send the international sign for “don’t bother me” by wearing the biggest headphones they could find. We don’t always have headphone characters, and this season we had two!

Another unexpected trend this season was the beret. Usually a symbol of involvement in the military, the beret is no longer only for Street Fighter characters and Jean-Claude Van Damme! danderes and kuuderes can also rock this look regardless of their affiliation. Aika Suzuki’s look in PSO2 is a bit military and she wears her teal beret with pride! Shizuru opts for a cute purple beret that matches the rest of her outfit and adorns it with a cute little onigiri pin.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Wesite" url="http://news.bbkbrnk.com/page/3" ]

Another set of head accessories were ears and horns. And of course, we couldn’t have an anime list of any sort without some sort of a cat-girl making an appearance! Clarion has cute little cat ears that go extremely well with her Lolita look and Mana’s trance outfit comes with one of the coolest hoodies I’ve ever seen. It’s baggy, black and has horns!

Final Thoughts

There you have it! So if you want to emulate the winter season’s kuuderes and danderes, go for a short and/or wild colored hairstyle, take full advantage of thigh-highs, tights and long sleeves, find a pair of boots you love and wear black, white and/or your favorite shade of green and you’re set! If you want to take it a step further, go for the hoodie with ears, a beret or some fat headphones. You will be the coolest kuudere / dandere around! Who was your favorite kuudere/dandere of the season? My favorites were Mana Asuha (Luck & Logic), Koito Minase (Musaigen no Phantom World) and Saki Inui (Aokana) Do you have a look you’d like to try out? I want Sylvia’s crazy hair and Mana’s hoodie!! Let us know what you think! Have you noticed any other interesting fashion trends in anime? Thanks for reading! Till next time! Nya~!

What is Himedere? - If you kneel before me, I might tell you. Let’s face it: there are a lot of –dere types in anime. The most popular is tsundere, a personality that has marked character development easing from hard-to-get to lovey-dovey. You’re probably saying, “Yes, I know what tsundere is. I came here to find out about himedere.” Great! You’re in the right place. Let’s start with a definition. As you probably guessed, it has something to do with princesses. The “hime” part of himedere means “princess,” so the easiest way to describe himedere is a princess-y tsundere, or sometimes a princess-y kuudere. She’ll usually speak in a haughty way and expect you to do everything for her. She’s a princess after all. You should be holding her up on a pedestal and singing her praises. From her attitude to her accessories to her perfectly placed hair, she oozes rich and beautiful. It’s no wonder you were attracted to her. She shines like the royal gems she’s wearing—or pretending to be wearing. Just because she’s a princess doesn’t make her Princess Peach. If you were all-in on your princess but forgot about the “tsundere” part of the equation, you’re in for a hell of a ride! Himederes are demanding. Forget the whole trying to look good for the public. They already think they’re adored by the masses. They have no trouble putting you in your place. What’s your place? Running errands for them, waiting on them like a butler, and never, ever touching them. She just can’t sully her precious skin with commoner filth. She will constantly remind you of her elite status and let you know how high up the food chain she is compared to you. That sounds horrible. Why even try? Oh, don’t worry, my friend. If you prove your worth with your superior skill, undying affection, or just stupid luck, the himedere will fall into your lap, maybe literally. Somewhere along the story, the himedere will eventually open her heart to you, and you’ll have the shiniest best girl in town.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Where can I find a himedere?

The easiest place to look is wherever you think you could find a real princess. That’s right. A good number of himederes are actually princesses. That personality has to come from somewhere, right? It might be more accurate to say that a lot of himederes are former princesses and have lost some of their status. After all, what are they doing mingling with the commoners anyway? Even if she’s lost their status, she hasn’t lost her pride. She’ll keep up the strong and sophisticated act to keep you at arm’s distance so that, hopefully, you won’t learn about her dethroning. Once you do though, be ready for a wonderful change in personality!

Ange from Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo (Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons)

[sourceLink asin="B00O73TGP6" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Ange, or formerly Angelize Ikaruga Misurugi, first princess of the Misurugi Empire, is a definitive himedere princess in the ecchi, action, mecha, fantasy genre mish-mash Cross Ange. After being stripped of her royal status and dignity for lacking the ability to control magical technology, Ange is forced to join a mecha military army of rough and tumble girls who fight dragons. Ange takes on a cold demeanor to protect herself both physically and mentally. She throws away her royal name, but her royal upbringing comes out in the way she speaks and carries herself. In true himedere fashion, Ange warms up to the sweetest guy on the planet, while simultaneously royally denying the biggest piece of garbage in the multi-universe, and we love her for it. You go girl! Himedere became even more popular in 2015, with two new anime princesses: the hot-blooded Stella Vermillion in Chivalry of a Failed Knight and cool-headed Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld in The Asterik War. Both are talented princess from their respective countries trying to make a name for themselves on a big stage of duel fights. These two himes are initially extremely combative to their male protagonists. Stella orders Ikki to stop breathing, while Julis is ready to give a full beat down to Ayato, a newbie at the school. Stella might be a little faster to the punch line than Julis, but both girls find themselves warming up to their dueling partners as the major romances in both series. At any rate, himederes with real hime credentials won’t be leaving the ecchi or harem genres any time soon.

Not all himederes are “real” princesses.

Does a himedere have to be princess? No, sometimes a himedere is a more of a societal princess, an elite or socially well-off person. This includes Sanzenin Nagi from Hayate the Combat Butler (2007), who is a snobby tsundere but secretly has feelings for her butler. You could even include our favorite tsundere gangster princess Kirisaki Chitoge from Nisekoi (2014). Much like the real princess type of himedere, the social princess type can also be former elites, such as Aoyama Mio in The World Only God Knows (2010), who keeps up the elite daughter act even after she lost it all. These types of himederes aren’t hard to find, usually with a servant in tow, but some himederes are straight-up pretending, as we’ll soon see below.

Azuki Azusa from Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat)

Azuki Azusa, from the harem comedy The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat, was bullied at her previous school. She decides to pretend to be an elite, taking on several part-time jobs to fund her rich girl act. Her social princess façade is broken, and she develops feelings for our main man Yoto, but we can easily see why people would mistake her for an elite princess. Beyond having popular girl looks and the style to match, Azuki is sure to be disappointed in your commoner’s date. Still, as a tried and true himedere, she’ll over look your minion status once she gets a good look at your beautiful personality. As such, some himederes have little reason for their hime act, and they simply have princess syndrome. They demand the best in everything, are egotistical, and can be quite narcissistic. They act like God’s gift to the world, or at least God’s gift to you. Still, you can’t hate them, because they’re so darn cute! This princess-y attitude is well described in the song “World is Mine” by Hatsune Miku, a virtual singer, or vocaloid. In the song, Miku-tan proclaims that she is the number one princess in the world. If you want to know exactly what modern himederes want, this song would be a good place to start your research.

Sometimes guys can be a little himedere too. What is oujidere?

Just as there are tsundere guys, there can be guys with a little himedere in them, or should we say a little oujidere in them? “Ouji” is Japanese for “prince,” and just like himedere, it describes a princely tsundere, or more commonly, a princely kuudere. They’re arrogant and annoying, but a true prince charming is lurking behind those haughty sneers and holier-than-thou glares. Be it true royalty like Prince Raj from Snow White with the Red Hair (2015), or the social elite like Ootori Kyoya from Ouran High School Host Club (2006), these turn-around guys could be princes that dreams are made of. Sometimes they are just mean bad boys, like Sata Kyouya from Wolf Girl and Black Prince (2014), but there’s a good reason why these guys get the girl in the end. Eventually, we see they have hearts of gold.

Oujideres aren’t exclusively for shoujo romances, mind you. Be it “King of the Court” Kageyama Tobio in the on-going Haikyuu!! (2014) or Mr. Emperor’s Eye Akashi Seijuro from Kuroko no Basket, oujideres are popping up everywhere and learning to bare their souls to everyone they care for. Kageyama learns that his superior skill doesn’t make him above the team and soon becomes the setter of Karasuno’s dreams. For Akashi, though, this guy is the final boss super villain of Kuruko no Basket. A social elite with obsessive perfectionism, he ruled the Generation of Miracles, and now he rules the best high school team in the country, Rakuzan. Like any ruling emperor, Akashi is always making people kneel before him and using his less talented teammates as pawns. Akashi totally deserves his royal moniker and perpetual captain status, but he’s not exactly Mr. Nice Guy. Akashi refuses to change his haughty ways. It isn’t until Kuroko and Seirin High School show him a thing or two that he realizes the madness brewing inside him. He reverts to the sweet, caring, and still extremely competent young leader we always knew he could be.

O, himedere, himedere, whereforeart thou, himedere? Himederes carry all the appeal of a tsundere or a kuudere with the added bonus of a princess demeanor! After you can get past their get-away-from-me-maggot exteriors, you can be guaranteed some royal-level affection. They know what they want and how to keep themselves in top condition, and they’ll probably know all that about you too. Based on anime logic, she’s probably intelligent, educated, well-mannered, and worldly. Add in those cute anime looks and high-class style, and who could say no? She belongs on that pedestal, and we’re going to be first in line to hold it! Well, you came here looking for answers on the mystical creature that is the himedere. Here’s everything you need to know and probably some extra stuff too. Tsunderes may always have your heart, but there must be a little room in there for the himederes… Or is it that you love himederes already but didn’t know it?! As this gap moe trend continues, look forward to more himederes and oujideres to come!

What is Yangire? – Why be normal when being insane is much more fun?

They are cute, they are innocent, they are completely insane. They are yangire. You thought yandere girls are dangerous? Then you haven’t met the yangire, a person who seems to be normal on the outside, but can easily snap and reveal a violent and insane personality. They can be both male and female and have one, two or even multiple personalities. Yangire characters are sometimes also referred to as “Cute and Psycho”. Both yandere and yangire are crazy. The difference though is what causes these characters to go crazy. While yandere girls (and boys!) do insane things out of love for another person, yangire characters have their own set of reasons. Usually they went through a traumatic experience in the past which causes severe emotional and mental damage. This also makes yangire characters more dangerous than yandere since it is impossible to predict when they will snap and show their true self. The word yangire is a combination of the word “yanderu” which means being sick and “kireru” which means to cut or to snap (as in losing one’s temper and turning crazy). While yangire are similar to yandere in the sense that they have a clear personality disorder, they are not “deredere” meaning caring and in love with another character. This means that their actions are not caused by affection, but simply because they are crazy. Charming, aren’t they? Now that we all know a little bit more about the mad world of yangire, let’s take a look at a few examples. After all, every yangire is a unique little (psychotic) snowflake. Enjoy!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Yangire 1 Personality (Y1P)

Most yangire characters can be divided into two categories: yangire with one personality and yangire with two personalities. The first group includes all characters who - you guessed it - only have one personality, meaning that they are fully aware of all of their actions. They know exactly how psychotic they are and yet don’t really seem to care. One of these characters is Rena Ryuuguu from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

When They Cry is a thriller with psychological and mystery elements set in a quiet Japanese town. Since the story is based on a mystery game it is told in the form of different story arcs all revolving around Keiichi Maebara. He lives the life of a normal school boy, but as it usually goes in anime this soon is about to change. He gets involved in a mysterious murder that not only turns his world upside down, but also makes him question the true identity of his closest friends. Even though Rena is not the main hero of the story, she is easily one of the most well-known characters in the series. Her appearance and behavior perfectly match the sweetheart stereotype. She is a kind girl who loves treasure hunting and collecting everything small and cute. But we wouldn’t mention her right now if that was all, right? Without giving too much away of the storyline, let’s just say that Rena has a traumatic past which caused her to discover a darker side of herself. And when we say “darker” we mean “more psychotic and clearly ready to kill you”. She is highly unstable and can turn into a killer within seconds if someone crosses her path. If you want to see a yangire girl in full action, definitely check out When They Cry.

Yangire 2 Personality (Y2P)

What is better than a person with a psychotic personality? A person with two psychotic personalities of course! That’s not really how it goes, but you get the point. This group includes all characters with a split personality, mostly due to a traumatic experience. They usually don’t know that they have an alter ego and are genuinely harmless people. But when their second personality comes out you’d better run, because these characters are not known to be forgiving. Just like Mahiru “Shinya” Banba from Akuma no Riddle.

Akuma no Riddle is an anime for all fans of Battle Royale and similar murderous games. Thirteen girls enroll in Class Black of the prestigious Myoujou Academy, but they are not here to learn algebra nor grammar. Their mission is to assassinate one of their classmates and whoever succeeds in doing so will get one wish granted. Sounds like the place to be for a yangire character. Mahiru or Shinya is one of the school girls and the very definition of a split personality. Her two names can be translated to “midday” and “full night” and that is exactly how much her two sides differ from each other. Mahiru is a shy girl who struggles at standing up for herself and usually walks away from confrontations. Her other side, Shinya, has a different way of solving problems and let’s just say it involves lots of cursing and the use of a giant sledgehammer. Her split personality is also reflected in her clothing since she wears both a white and a black sock on her legs. Even though Mahiru knows of Shinya’s existence, she treats her like a different person and talks to her more like a friend than to herself. Once again, a traumatic past was the cause for Mahiru losing her mind and creating Shinya as a coping mechanism.

Male Yangire

You didn’t think only anime girls could be this crazy, did you? The most famous yangire characters might be girls, but there are more than enough male counterparts out there to keep you up at night. Just take a look at your favorite anime psychopaths and chances are high that they are at least to some part yangire characters. But there is one man who all of you know, but probably weren’t aware that he is yangire. We are talking about no one else than Light Yagami from Death Note.

Death Note is easily one of the most famous anime out there and of those shows that you recommend to your friends who say “anime are only for kids”. The mystery thriller revolves around Light Yagami who stumbles across the Death Note, a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside of it. What comes next is a head-to-head between Light and the police force as well as his restless pursuit of becoming a god. Light shows all the yangire characteristics. He is a sweet boy and ace student on the outside, loved by everyone and role model to his peers. But what no one knows is that he hides a darker personality on the inside. He might be fueled by a strong sense of justice, but his way of fighting for it is more than questionable. What is also debatable is what actually causes Light to create Kira as a second identity. Some might say he was just born this way and already had an almost psychotic side. It’s also possible that Light couldn’t handle the power the Death Note gave him and slowly lost his mind. But whether the Death Note is the actual cause of his madness or simply brought out a side of him that was already sick before doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that as the story continues Light slowly but surely grows insane and doesn’t back away from killing anyone standing in his way.

There is a whole spectrum of craziness when it comes to anime characters. Some are just a little bit eccentric, others are questionably weird and then we have mentally deranged characters like the ones we have presented today. You might think of them what you want, but one thing is for sure: they are some of the most interesting characters out there and are always good for bringing more action into the storyline. To put a quick disclaimer at the end, let us just mention that anime definitions are not set in stone and there is more to each of them than we could mention in one article. Whether a character is yangire or more of something else can be subjective, so keep that in mind when you start a discussion down below. Feel free to tell us your opinion on yangire and who your favorite characters are. Your input is as always more than welcome in our comment section.
